Biography

I am a retired RN and an artist, widowed since 2010. Before my husband's long illness preceding his death, I did extensive research on his Derby, Derbyshire ancestry, spurred by a detailed family tree and diary in possession of my father-in-law, "Bert" Wallis, 1914-1997.

Bert Wallis' family migrated to London, through marriage into the Haden family, which included Sir Francis Seymour Haden's wife, who was the half-sister of the painter James McNeil Whistler. The Haden family was also linked by marriage to the artist, William Horsley, designer of the first commercial Christmas card, and to the artist referred to as 'Wright of Derby'.

My research into my late husband's paternal Wallis English roots, as well as his French Canadian maternal roots, encompasses many of French Canada's founding families, including Hebert, Perrault, Taschereau, Bouchette/Bouchet, etc. My research includes use of, among other sources, several antique, published genealogy/historical books by Pierre-Georges Roy handed down to me from my husband's cousin, Genevieve "Veva" Chaussegros de Lery, so when I use the phrase 'family knowledge' as the source for my profiles and contributions, I do so with conviction of its accuracy.

As of 2020, I also began research on my half-brother's Pope family, which included the Owings family, founders of Owings Mills, Maryland in the Anne Arundel area, part of the long history of Baltimore, Maryland. The Owings family history included the Dorsey family, linked to Wallis Simpson Warfield, married to would-have-been King Edward. Both the Owings and Dorsey familes were land and slave owners pre-Civil War, and during.

Although my postings may not be perfect in formatting, and my source work may be 'skimpy' by professional genealogist standards (because much of it was gathered before the internet was available) I strive for accuracy. I also submit biographical profiles in my own narrative form....to create 'personal' portraits of my subjects. That's the 'artist' in me.

Hello again, Linda,

I believe I have found Eleanor Wells Dorsey Fenner in a tree in Ancestry. There are discrepancies, the foremost being that she was supposedly born in Maryland, not Germany, but there may be some reason the family WANTED her birth to be recorded that way. Folks were sometimes 'fast and loose' with facts back then.

Anyway, Eleanor Wells Dorsey was definitely married to Stephen H. Fenner, although it was his father (also named Stephen) who was born in Germany.

Eleanor Wells Dorsey Fenner and Stephen Fenner had a dtr. named Eleanor Delila (b.7 Jun 1765 in Prince George Co. Md. - d. 9 Mar 1833 in Jackson, Highland Co. Ohio). Eleanor Delila Fenner married 'Reason' Moberly (1758 - 1841). Reason Moberly and she had at least 2 sons, James and John. John Moberly married twice, to Fenner girls. 1st to Elizabeth Anne (1791-1843) and then Ruth Fenner (1802 - 1855). I don't know if they were his cousins....but probably.

John Moberly and Elizabeth Anne had Rachel Rebecca Moberly, who married Christopher Hussey (1816-1899). Rachel was born 23 Oct 1817 in Liberty, Highland Co. Ohio and died 26 Oct 1890 in Marion, Lee Co. Iowa. Rachel and Christopher Hussey then had John C. Hussey (1837 - 1908), who in turn had Christopher Lewis Hussey (1859 - 1933). I don't know if they were born in Ohio or Iowa.

The Moberly family after Eleanor Wells day, all seemed to be born and reside in Highland Co. Ohio

Besides Rachel, John Moberly (Sr) had at least 7 other children: Caleb, Frederick, William, George Washington, Mariah, Mary Ann, and Delilah. It's unclear from reading John's will if Caleb and John Caleb, as he mentioned later, are the same person.

Oh! And Eleanor Wells Dorsey Fenner's 'mother' was listed as Elizabeth Higdon (1719 - 1803), but she also was recorded (?) as being born in Maryland!

I hope this gives you some promising leads.

Christine. .

Hi, Linda.

Wow, that is quite a story about little orphan Eleanor, but if she is the same as the one who married Mr. Fenner, it sounds as though coming to America worked out well for her. I will look through my Dorsey sources and will get back to you one way or the other. I hope I can be of help. I may take me a bit of time...but I will let you know of any progress or not as soon as possible!

Christine.

Hello Christine,

I believe we are distant cousins and likely both descendants of Eleanor Dorsey (see Douglas Ross DNA connections to Eleanor). I am continuing to bang away at finding our Eleanor Wells Dorsey's personal history in Scotland. I have seen many genealogical entries in the last 20 years that she was born in Maryland to a Caleb Dorsey and wife, which I have my doubts about. According to an account written by an "in-law", John Brouse, in 1855, she was an orphan from Scotland. Do you - or anyone reading this - happen to have an further information about her personal history?

The following is what I have:

"Also spelled Elinor. Also listed as Eleanor Wells Dorsey. Birth year listed as about 1735 and about 1742. Marriage date also given as 1753. She is believed to have been an orphan from Scotland and came to the US with some Scottish relatives or neighbors.

"Posted by Bea TrItch: I am looking for any information about Eleanor Dorsey, b abt 1742 in Scotland, and any of her family. According to family researchers and tradition (undocumented to my knowledge) her father, mother, brothers and sisters all died before she was ten years old, leaving her in the care of an uncle, her father's brother. At 13 years of age she came to America with a neighbor family and settled in Maryland. In later years it was learned that property in Scotland and another estate had been left to her eldest son, but none of the family had enterprise of means in those days to go after it. She was of Scotch-Presbyterian stock. "Although I do not know about the Duvall book, I have some of the same information, which I recently received, in xerox form. It is called the FENNER RECORD as is described as: "Taken from a record written Dec. 26, 1855, by John A. Brouse, a great uncle of Mrs. Ora Wilkins Lesh (Mrs. Chas. P. Lesh, and copied by her for Mrs. Hallie Fenner Durnell, and recopied by Mrs. F. W. Farrar - 912 Electric Ave., Salem, Oregon." It states that "Stephen Fenner was born in Germany, about 1722. He came to this country at an early date, and joined the American, or Revolutionary army. In 1752 he married Miss Eleanor Dorsey, and they lived many years together and raised a large family. Lived at Broad Top,Pa. He lived to see all his family married. He was industrious, and frugal, and provided well for his large family. His will was probated in January 1801 in Huntingdon Co., Pa so he must have died late in 1800." There then follows a transcription of Stephen Fenner's will. The Mrs. Lesh mentioned above has added items to this record. I quote: "Mrs. Lesh found in Richmond, Va., at the land office, where Stephen Fenner of Maryland had bought 383 acres near Berkley Springs in 1779--Bk. R, page 340." There are mentions of Eleanor Dorsey being born in Scotland in 1735, and that her father, mother, brothers and sisters all died before she was ten years old, leaving her to the care of an uncle, her father's brother. "They abused her so much that at 13 years of age she came to America with a neighbor's family." She died March 9, 1833 at Hillsboro, Highland Co., OH. "

She married Stephen Fenner before 1765 (abt 1763). At the time of the birth of their first child they were living in Prince George Parish, Prince George, MD. The family moved to Huntingdon Co PA (Stephen Fenner's Will proved 8 Jan 1800) and on to Highland County. OH by abt 1810. Eleanor Dorsey Fenner died 9 Mar 1833."

Thanks so much, Linda
