In 1665 Margaret Ward released her right in some of this property, which was then in the occupation of Richard Nightingale. There had been a brewery in this locality from a very early' period. In the 17th century John Victor had a brewhouse on the east side of Middlegate street, which passed from his son to John Woodroffe, whose only daughter and heir, Elizabeth, married William Salter of Norwich. This brewery was absorbed by that of the Wards, which continued gradually to increase until in the present century, it has become one of the largest out of London. (Written in 1872) [3]
