Biography

Samuel Bond was born in January 24, 1821 in Saco, Maine to Robert Bond III and Mary (Dearborn) Bond. [1]

Samuel married Mary H Wentworth in Portland, Maine. [2] There is little information available about Mary H. Wentworth. This was probably her 2nd marriage, and her maiden name was may have been Haines or Haynes.

Samuel and Mary had four surviving children together - Charles (b. March 17, 1844), Samuel Jr (b. February 2,1846), Emma L (b. 1853), and George Thomas (b. 1854). Another daughter, Mary Ella, was born in 1848 but died of Scarlet Fever at the age of 9. [3][4][5]

In the 1850 census Samuel (age 29) lived in Portland Ward 7, Cumberland, Maine, with his wife, Mary H. Bond and three children, Charles W (5), Samuel (4) and Mary E (1). He was employed as a cooper[6]

Mary H. Bond died of consumption in 1860. [7], and Samuel then married Clara Berry on Christmas Eve, 1860, a few months later. [8]

In the 1870 census Samuel (age 50 and still employed as a cooper) lived in Portland Ward 7, Cumberland, Maine, with his second wife, Clara Bond, Jenny Berry (16, most likely Clara's child from a previous marriage), Thomas Bond (16, probably George Thomas Bond, from Samuel's first marriage, who would be 16 at this point), and Cora F. Bond, age 4 (probably a child of Samuel and Clara [9]

Samuel was a Private during the Civil War with an unassigned regiment of Maine and later received a pension as an invalid war veteran. [10]

Samuel died at the age of 54 on 4 August 1875 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine, of a "Disease of the Brain"[11]

For a long time I thought that the Samuel Bond (1821-1875) who lived in Portland Maine and was married to Mary E. Haines Wentworth was the son of Samuel Bond (Bond-4745), and Ann (Nancy) Rafter from Nova Scotia known as Samuel Thompson Bond. Samuel Bond (Bond-4745) and Ann DID have a son named Samuel Thompson Bond, but he was born in 1824 and lived and died in Hants, Nova Scotia. It is now clear that there were two different people named Samuel Bond who were born a few years apart; one lived in Nova Scotia and married but had no children on record (Bond-7350) and the other who lived in Portland Maine, married Mary E. Haines Wentworth, and had four surviving children. I created a profile for Samuel Thompson Bond several years ago (Bond-7350) indicating his correct parents, but incorrectly identifying his birth date and wife. Since there truly WAS a Samuel Thompson Bond, rather than change the information in his profile I created this new profile (Bond-9341) for the Samuel Bond who was born in 1821, lived in Portland Maine, and was married to Mary E. Haines Wentworth. Either I or someone else still need to correct the incorrect information in the profile for Samuel Thompson Bond (Bond-7350).

Evidence points strongly to Robert Bond and his wife Mary (Dearborn) Bond of Saco ME as the father of Bond-9341.

The "First book of records of the town of Pepperellborough now the city of Saco" (https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=053LDwAAQBAJ&amp;amp;amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;amp;amp;pg=GBS.PA3) shows on page 105 that Robert Bond and his wife (elsewhere identified as Mary Dearborn) from Saco ME had 10 surviving children, the fourth was named Samuel, b. 1/24/1821. Coincidentally, two of the other boys in the family have the same name as two of Samuel Bond (Bond-9341)'s children with Mary Haines Wentworth: Charles W and George Thomas. Furthermore, the surnames "Haines" and "Wentworth" are both prominent in the Saco historical records, so it makes sense that Samuel and Mary may have known one another in Saco, then married as adults in Portland ME (which is very close to Saco).
