Notes

Note N325" Spence's History of Hickman County"

In 1845 William Spence lived where William Stanfill now lives. He was born in North Carolina in 1792 and came to Harpeth, near the Newsome place in 1810. He was a poor boy without education, and worked here as a hireling for 10 years. At the age of 28 he married Phebe Forehand. John Davis , who lived in that neighborhood, induced him to visit Hickman County., where Davis owned land. The result was he purchased from Davis 450 acres south of, and adjoining Little Lot. He settled on this land in1845.

William logged and farmed for a living. Emma Glades Poor told me William was almost blind from being in the smoke of the burning brush. Someone told me he a had a red beard that was so long he would tuck it in his beard when he worked. September 2014

Dr. Barbara Beall, a long time researcher of Spence and other surnames has come to the same conclusion that I have, William was an orphan that followed his relations west. We may never be able to determine his parents. She posted this discussion of who William was and who he isnt descended from.

“I learned about this William Spence years ago when I first started doing genealogy. Someone posted a question about him on a discussion board: his wifes name was Phoebe Forehand. Had anyone ever heard of him? Well, I hadnt. Curiosity seized my interest, but I quickly lost interest when I could discover nothing about him. My renewed interest in him developed this week when I found a picture of his gravestone on Ancestry.com. This picture was originally posted there by RobertDennison91 to the DennisonHarrington/Brown/TidwellParker families Family Tree. And after devoting a greater part of the week to William Spence, I can now tell who he wasnt and who he was.

WHO WILLIAM SPENCE WASNT! It appears that William Spence has been in many different trees. He still appears in many different trees because once an error is made, it spreads until corrected. The most common error is placing William in the household of Joseph Spence (1774-1841) and Lydia Sawyer (1776-1825). (Joseph was a son of my fifth great grandfather, William Spence, and his wife Judha Perry.) North Carolina Bible Records identifies the following children for Joseph and Lydia:

1. Peggy Spence (born 11 Jun 1796 in Pasquotank County.)

2. William Spence (1802-1831 )-[My Note: this William has been confused with William (born 1795). They are not the same person. This William was born 25 Feb 1802 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, and he died 27 Dec 1831 in Pasquotank. He remained single and did not leave Pasquotank County.

3. Sarah Spence (born 12 Nov 1805 in Pasquotank County.)

4. Olly Spence (born 29 Apr 1807 in Pasquotank County.)

5. Elisha Spence (born 29 Mar 1810 in Pasquotank County; died 9 Nov 1827 in Pasquotank County). He married Nancy Wood.

6. Evan Spence (born 26 Oct 1812 in Pasquotank County)

7. Elizabeth Spence (born 30 Dec 1815 in Pasquotank County). (1)

The second popular tree for placing William Spence (1795) is in the David and Mary Ann (McElea) Spence Tree.

According to Louise Bishop Fountain:

David Spence, son of Thomas and Sarah Harriman Spence, was born about 1758 in New Jersey, d 1839 or before Apr 1840, Robertson Co., TN. He married Mary Ann McElyea, dau of Lodwick and May or Mary (Powers) McElyea, about 1783, Surry Co., NC. She was b Oct 1763 in PA, probably York, Co. d about June 1863, at the advanced age of ninety nine years, eight months and 20 days, near Only (then Dunnington) Hickman Co., Tn.

(2)

David Spence is not related to the Pasquotank or Camden Spence Families. If there is a relationship, it would date back to Scotland. The children of David Spence and Mary Ann McElea were:

1. Rev. Thomas Spence (b. abt 1783, NC)

2. JamesJosephWilliam (?) (born bef 1790, NC; died bef his fathers estate was administered)

3. Phebe Spence (born about 1788-1789, NC)

4. Mary Spence (born bet 1790-1800)

5. Daniel Spence (b. 20 Jul 1794, Surry Co., NC)

6. Dicie Spence (b. about 1800)

7. Martha Spence (b. abt 1801, TN)

8. Lydia Spence (b. about 1804 or 1805, TN)

9. Delilah Spence (b. about 1808, TN)

10. John Lycurgus Spence (b. 13 Aug 1810, Robertson Co., TN)

11. Sarah Spence (b. abt 1786, NC) (3)

They lived in Hickman County, Tennessee at one time. At most, they may have been acquainted with William (1795), but they were not related.

The third placement for William (1795) is for people to add an r to his last name and make him a Spencer instead of a Spence. And none of the Spencer trees work for him either. He was definitely a Spence and not a Spencer.

SO WHO WAS WILLIAM SPENCE?

According to William Spences tombstone, he was born 9 Aug 1795 and he died 16 Sep 1869 in Hickman County, Tennessee. Census records indicate he was born in North Carolina. According to the Hickman County History P. 94, A History of Hickman County, Tennessee by W. Jerome D. Spence and David L. Spence, pub. 1900: In 1845 William Spence lived where William Stanfill now lives. He was born in North Carolina in 1792, and came to Harpeth, near the Newsom place, in 1810. He was a poor boy without education, and worked here as a hireling for ten years. At the age of twenty-eight he married Phoebe Forehand. John Davis, who lived in that neighborhood, induced him to visit Hickman County, where Davis owned land. The result was he purchased from Davis four hundred and fifty acres south of, and adjoining, Little Lot. He settled on this land in 1845. His sons were Miles, Mark, and John; his daughters, Narcissa, who married Robert Bratton, Jr.; Rebecca, who married Gill Anderson; Nancy, who married Robert Dean; and Tennessee, who married James Harrington. (4)

William appears to have had a close association with Brittain Spence (1791-1829)-a son of Samuel Spence (1760-1805) and Julian Gray (1760-1804) in Pasquotank, North Carolina. At first, I thought William may have been another of Samuels sons. If so, he was not mentioned in Samuels will.(5) I am beginning to think that William was an orphan from one of the Pasquotank or Camden County Spence families, and he may have lived with several families before moving out on his own. One of those families may well have been Samuel Spences. And apparently, he either accompanied Brittain to Tennessee, or else he followed him later. William arrived in Davidson County in 1810. On May 9, 1812, Brittain married Jenny Forehand (1797-1830) in Davidson County. On October 20, 1820, William married Jennys sister, Phoebe Forehand (1802-1878), in Davidson County. As noted in the Hickman County History, William worked for ten years after his arrival in Davidson County in 1810. Census records for Davidson County in 1830 and 1840 show William a resident there, where …John Davis, who lived in that neighborhood, induced him to visit Hickman County, where Davis owned land. The result was he purchased from Davis four hundred and fifty acres south of, and adjoining, Little Lot.

(6)

William relocated to Hickman and settled on his land in 1845, and he appears on the 1850 and 1860 Census Records there. There is a Tennessee Supreme Court Case of record in 1852 titled Robert A. Hill, exe. of William Whitefield v. William Spence.(7) As yet, I do not know the details of that case, but it did involve this William Spence. He died September 16, 1869 in Hickman County.

The children of William Spence and Phoebe Forehand follow:

1. Narcissa Spence. Narcissa was born 31 Jan 1825, Davidson County, Tennessee and she died 18 Jan 1911 in Hickman County, Tennessee. Her husband was Robert Franklin Bratton, Jr. (1823-1900). Their children were: Thomas Miles Bratton (1847-1934); William H. Bratton (1848-1938); Martha J. Bratton (1851-1876); John S. Bratton (1856-1921); George W. Bratton (1857-1927); Lonnie F. Bratton (1860-1934)-his name may have been Lou, or there was a son named Lou who would have been Lonnies twin; Mary E. Bratton (born 1865).

2. Rebecca Jane Spence. Rebecca was born 13 Sep 1830, Davidson County, Tennessee and she died 9 Nov 1899 Little Lot, Hickman County, Tennessee. On October 2, 1849, she married John Gill Anderson (1827-1900) in Hickman County, Tennessee. Their children were Matilda E. Anderson (1854-1862); Eliza J. Anderson (1856-1856); William H. Anderson (born 1857); Mary J. Anderson (born 1860); Thomas Lee Anderson (born 1862); Nancy Anderson (born 1863); Marian Anderson (born 1866); Mary L. Anderson (born 1867); Margaret Maggie A. Anderson (1869-1959); John S. Anderson (1871-1892).

3. Miles Spence. Miles was born in 1830 in Davidson County, Tennessee and he died in 1849 in Mississippi. He married Nancy Spence Campbell (1830-1846). I have no additional information about them.

4. Mark A. Spence. Mark was born 6 Dec 1834 in Davidson County, Tennessee and he died 8 Apr 1906 in Centerville, Hickman County, Tennessee. His wife was Louisa C. Gill (1837-1880). Their children were: Miles Spence (1856-1946); Alma Spence (1858-1952); Samuel Gill Spence (1860-1940); Anna Z. Spence (1866-1948); William A. Spence (1868-1949). I found a picture of Mark Spence, which I am posting here because he resembles some of the Spences in my family.
