Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Birth: Lillian was likely born between 1854 and 1856. See "Research Notes" below. She is the daughter of Thomas Washburn and Susan A. (Goodwin) Washburn in Kennebunkport, Maine.[1] Thomas Washburn and Susan were born in Kennebunkport as well.[2][3]

Siblings: The following are assumed:[4][5]

  • James O, born about 1852. Died 9 Aug 1858.
  • Annie B, born about 1856. Died 2 Jul 1858.
  • William "Willie" H, born 13 Oct 1859 in Maine. Died 2 Mar 1906,
  • Frank A, born about 1868 in Maine.

1860 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[6] "Olive E." age 6, is living with her parents and siblings in the home of her maternal grandparents Oliver and Betsy Goodwin.[4] She is attending school. Also living in the home is 84 year old Ruth Durham and 15 year old Arseneath Goodwin, presumably her mother's brother. "Olive's" father and grandfather are farmers.

1870 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine: Lilly's family is listed on the census with their last name transcribed as Washborn(e) and Family Search has it indexed Washburne. Lilly is 16 years old. The family own real estate and her father is a farmer. They are living in Kennebunkport. Just below her parents and siblings are enumerated the Goodwins. It's unclear if all or some of them reside in Lilly's home.[5]

  • Besty age 60, Lilly's maternal grandmother.
  • Nehemiah age 39
  • Susan age 29
  • Minnie age 2

First Marriage: 28 Aug 1872 "Olive E. by the name of Lillie O. Washburn"[7] married Robert P Benson in Kennebunkport, Maine.[8] Robert P. Benson was the son of Robert Benson, Jr and Phoebe Chadbourne. Both of Robert's parents were born in Maine.[3]

Children: the following been found for this couple:[7][3]

1880 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[3] " Research Notes" below cocnerning Lillian's date of birth. She is keeping house. Robert is 31 years old and working as a blacksmith. Living next door is the Hadlock Family: Daniel L. Hadlock, age 66; Martha A, Hadlock, age 54; and Warren Hadlock age 22. Lillian's second marriage is to Warren.[2]

Divorce: 5 Dec 1883 Robert divorces Lillian. Per York County Court Records,

"It is therefore ordered and decreed by the court on this 14th day of the term June D. 1883 that the bond of matrimoney hereto entered into by the said Robert P. Benson and the said Olive E. Benson be and are the same are hereby disolved nisi for causes alleged and said libled. Certif. issued on appication to the clerk on December 5, 1883." Within the court document it is recognzied Olive E. is otherwise called Lillie O. Benson. In a writ of attachment, "he has ever been faithful husband . . and kept and performed all his marriage vows and covenants, but for that said Olive E. unmindful of her marriage vows and covenants for three years last past without cause on his part has been alienated in affection from him, neglected to perform her marital duties, refused to cohabit with him . . . she commited the crime of adultery with one Daniel W. Hadlock,"

Olive does not appear in court and makes default. The court approves the facts alleged are proved. The couple have two children Ernest W. age 10 and Florence P. age 7. The care and custody of Ernest is decreed to Robert.[7]

The name of Daniel referred to in the divorce record above appears to be the legal name of the son D. Warren or Warren D. age 22 living next door to the Bensons in 1880, not the father Daniel age 66 named in the census.[3] It is Warren Hadlock whom Lillie marries in 1885. Warren has the middle initail D in the 1910 and 1920 census.[9][10] His first name is indicated as the initial D. with his middle name listed as Warren on his daughter's marriage record[11] and death record[12] and Warren's cemetery memorial stone.[13]

Second Marriage: 22 Apr 1885 Lillie O. (Washborn) Benson marries Warren Hadlock in Farmington, New Hampshire. They are both residents of New Durham, New Hampshire. Lillie is listed as 29 years old and a housekeeper. Warren is a 26 year old laborer and this appears to be his first marriage. He was born in Kennebunkport, Maine the son of Daniel L. Hadlock a farmer born in Falmouth, Maine. Warren's mother, Matha A. Hadlock, was born in Berwick, Maine.[2] These names and the age for Warren match the family who was living next door in 1880.[3]

*Child: with Warren.

  • Besse (Bessie) is born 19 Mar 1891 in Kennebunk, Maine.[14][15] Marriage to Robert A. Fiske on 27 June 1907 at 16 years old.[11] Dies 10 Nov 1914 at 23 years old.[12]

1900 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[14]Lillie, Warren and their 9 year old daughter a living in a home which is farmer. Warren is a farmer and owns the farm with not mortgage. There is a farm schedule listed. They have a 19 year old boarder Harry Palmer who is single and works in a mill.

-This census confirms that Lillian has had 3 children and all are living

1910 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[9] The couple has moved to North Street where they are now renting. Warren is working as a mail carrier, RFD.[16] They have a boarder Mary Washbourne a widow. It does not list Mary as a relative even though her last name and age are similar to Lillie's. Mary was born in Pennsylvania. Her parents were born in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.

1920 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[10] Lillie and Warren continue to live on North Street, but they own their home with no mortgage. Lillian's daughter Florence W. (Benson) and her husband Ivory Ross along with their daughters Lillian M. and Madelyn B. are also living in the home. Warren continues his job as a mail carrier and son in-law Ivory works as a machinist in a tool shop.

Death of Second Husband: 1924 Daniel Warren Hadlock passes away.[13]

1930 Census, Kennebunkport, Maine:[17] Lillian's address continues to be North Street, but she is enumerated under her son in-law and daughter Ivory(Ivery?) and Florence Ross and their children. The Rosses are shown as owning the real estate. Ivory is a stonecutter at the Shine Quarry.

Death and Burial: 1938 Lillian passes away. She is buried with her husband Warren and at least one child in Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine.[18]

Research Notes

A Birth Record is Required. Concerning Lillian's date of birth. The follow sources are found:

  • The following census would put her birth year btweem 1854 and 1855: 1860[6], 1870[5], 1900[9], 1910[9], 1920[10],1930[17] and Find A Grave[18]
  • Marriage Record in 1885 indicates her age as 29 which would make her year of birth year about 1856.[2]
  • Appears the age on the 1880 Census should be 25 not 35.[3] An age of 25 woud snychronize her birth year with other sources. If she is 35 in 1880 her birth year would be circa 1845. This appears unlikely as it is prior to her parents marriage in circa 1851.[19] Lillian does not appear with her mother Susan Goodwin in the Goodwin family household on the 1850 Census;[20]; and Lillian is in the Goodwin home with both her parents in 1860.[6]

A Death Record is required for Lillian and her second husband Daniel Warren Hadlock .
