Biography

John Venimore was born^[1] in Cripplegate, London on 23 December 1814. Note: there seem to be a number of different places of birth - but Dartmouth, Devon is repeated in baptismal and census records. John Venimore was the son of the Reverend Benjamin Godwin and Elizabeth Hall.

John Venimore married^[2] Rachel Catherine Acworth in December 1847 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. They had 6 children: Catherine (born 1848); Mary (born 1850); Alice (born 1851); John Arthur (born 1852); Agnes Venimore (born 1854) and George Venimore (born 1857).

In the 1851 Census^[3]John Venimore (age 36) is living in Ashfield Place, Bradford with his wife Rachel Catherine (acworth) Godwin (age 24) and his daughters Catherine (born 1848) and Mary (born 1850).

John Venimore Godwin was an early photographer and Mayor of Bradford in 1865-1866.

In the 1861 Census^[4] John Venimore (age 46) is living in Otley with his wife Rachel Catherine (age 34) and their children. His occupation is recorded as a 'Merchant and Farmer'. The children present were: Catherine (age 12); Mary (age 11); John Arthur (age 8) and Agnes (age 7). Alice had died at age 2 in 1853 and George Venimore had died in 1859. Both deaths recorded at Otley.

In the 1881 Census"^[5] John Venimore (age 66) is living at Crow Trees at Rawdon working as a 'Stuff & Woollen Merchant'. His wife Rachel Catherine (age 54) and children Catherine (age 32), John (age 28) and Agnes (27) are still living with him. They are assisted by four domestic servants.

John Venimore Godwin died^[6] on 20 January 1898 at Rawdon^[7].
