Biography

Childhood in New Brunswick

Richard Wellington Smart, fifth of the thirteen children of John Smart and Olive Ann Pomeroy, was born in Pleasant Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish,[2] Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 19 Jan 1845.[3] Nathan B. Smart, and his twin brother, Peter, first two of the thirteen children of John Smart and Olive Ann Pomeroy, were born in New Brunswick, 22 Aug 1839.[4] New Brunswick was then a British Colony and remained so until 1867, when it became one of the four founding provinces of Canada.[5] The five of his siblings who were likewise born in New Brunswick were his three four elder brothers: twins Nathan and Peter (born in 1839), George (1841) and John (1843), and his younger sister, Mary (c1847).

Emigration to U.S.

By 1850, Richard and his parents and siblings (Nathan, Peter, George, John and Mary) had emigrated to the United States, specifically, to Bancroft, Maine, where they farmed and where, in 1850, Richard's brother, James, was born.[6] By 1860, in Bancroft, six more siblings were born: Edwin (born 1851), Susan (1853), Agnes (1855), and fraternal twins, Henry and Melissa (1859). As of 1 Jun 1860, Richard, his parents and all of his siblings continued to reside and farm in Bancroft, by that year with John's 25 year-old first cousin, Mary Orr.[7] Richard's twelfth and youngest sibling, Thomas, was born in Bancroft in 1861.

Marriage, Child

Richard married, in about 1876 and presumably in Maine, Emily "Emma" Smith.[8] They had one child,[9] John, who was born in Weston, Aroostook County, Maine, 14 Jan 1878.[10] In 1880, Richard and Emily farmed in Weston, Maine, residing with their son, John, and Emma's parents, John C. Smith and Margaret Smith.[11] A few doors down resided the family of Richard's first cousin, Abigail (Smart) Fish.[12]

Later Years, Death

In 1900, Richard and his wife, Emily, and their son, John, remained in Bancroft, farming.[13] Residing next door and also farming were Richard's brothers Edwin[14], George[15] and Nathan.[16] Their son, John, married Georgia Moody in 1904.[10] As of 1910, Richard and Emily were still farming, again in Weston, and their household included their son, John, his wife, Georgia, and John's son, Kenneth, as well as Emily's father, John C. Smith.[17] Richard died in Weston, Aroostook County, Maine, 26 Mar 1912, at age 67.[18] He's buried in Trout Brook Cemetery, in nearby Weston, Aroostook County, Maine.[18]
