Gilbert was born circa 1240, the eldest son and heir of Robert de Umfraville and Eva de Balliol.[1] Two additional sons were born to this marriage: Richard (b. ca 1242; d. 1278) and Ingram (b. ca 1245, d. after 1321). Gilberts mother Eva married secondly, following Robert's death before February 1258/9, Nicholas de Bolteby, while Gilbert was still a minor.[1]
No sources have been located regarding marriage or issue for Gilbert de Umfraville.
In February 1258/9, Gilbert's mother, newly married to Nicholas de Bolteby, was charged along with her husband, in having made waste, sales, and destruction in the wooded lands they held in Eva’s dower in Burtel, of the heritage of her underage son, Gilbert de Umfraville.[1] The outcome of this charge or any penalties imposed is unknown.
On 29 March 1279, Ingram became heir to his father's estates when Alexander III petitioned Edward I on Ingram's behalf to award to him the lands of his late father, following the death of Gilbert and the illness of Richard, who allegedly went insane.[1][2]
According to Findlater, Gilbert passed away in 1269 at age 29.[1] No other sources have been located to corroborate this stated date of death. However, it is known with certainty that he was deceased by 1279, based on the petition of Ingram to become heir to his father's estates.[2] The location of Gilbert's death and burial are unknown.
Gilbert, son of Robert de Umfraville and the subject of this profile, has been sometimes conflated with his cousin Gilbert (b. 1244 d. 1307), earl of Angus, who in his youth was in the custody of Simon de Montfort.[1][3]
Although Gilbert de Umfraville was heir to his father's estates, he died before his father and possibly as a result, there is scant information regarding his life within the de Umfraville family. Few sources were found that provided biographical data for him, with the following sources returning negative results:
