Maud (Mór) O'Brien was the daughter of Mahon O'Brien of Carrigogunnell,[1]and Elizabeth O'Brien of Ara, and her paternal grandparents were Donough O'Brien (of Carrigogunnell & Pobble)[2] and Margaret O'Kennedy of Aherlow, Co. Tipperary.[3]
The O'Briens of Carrigogunell descended from Conor O'Brien, King of Thomond,[4][5] (d.1426) who was the younger son of Mahon O'Brien, King of Thomond (d.1369), of Bunratty Castle, Co. Clare. (see image for pedigree)[6]
Coonagh/Counagh [Gonagh] is the name of the barony in County Limerick.
Family name is also Mac-i-Brien-Ara.
Alternate names: "Mac Ui Bhrian (Mac Brien). Mac Longachain (Long or Longan) is found alongside the O'Dwyers as chiefs of a territory which included part of this barony and part of Owney and Arra in Tipperary."
Among the children of Maud O'Brien and John FitzThomas FitzGerald was Catherine FitzGerald[8] who married William Bourke, 1st Baron Bourke of Connell, and they in turn had the following sons:[9]
Theobald d. 19 Aug 1579, m. Mary, daughter of Donough O'Brien, 1st/2nd Earl of Thomond[10][11] (Theobald was famous for killing his 1st cousin James FitzMaurice FitzGerald, the "Arch-Traitor", who had arrived in Smerwick (Co. Kerry) with Spanish and Italian troops during the Desmond Rebellion)

↑ Castle of Carrigogunnell, County Limerick: "This castle on a volcanic crag overlooking the Shannon estuary was probably founded by the de Burghs, but became a major seat of the O'Briens before being held by the earls of Desmond. It has a violent history. In 1536 after sustaining a prolonged barrage by cannon, it was surrendered to Lord Deputy Grey by its commander Edmund Cahill. He was hanged along with his entire garrison, but the castle was later recovered by the O'Briens. During the Cromwellian wars it was taken over by Captain Wilson, who occupied it, building a stable in the bawn. A Jacobite garrison of 150 men surrendered the castle to William III's forces in 1691, and shortly afterwards it was blown up. The castle is a mixture of periods; the roughly heart shaped outer enclosure extending down the slope dates from the C15, although the triangular section is a C16 addition. The north wall of the inner court on the highest part of the crag is C13."

↑ [Conor] was King of Thomond from 1400-1426 (his death). He was succeeded by his nephew Teige an Glemore -- son of Brian Catha an Aonaigh, who had been King from ca.1370-1400. Conor had 3 sons; Dermod, who left no issue; Donald Bishop of Limerick ; and Brian Duff, who carried on the line of the Carrigogunnell O’Briens, and is said to have given the name “Pobble Brian” to the Barony of that name in the County of Limerick ... The Carrigogunnell O’Briens
split into 2 branches in the time of Mahon, great grandson of Conor O’Brien, who died in 1642.

↑ " Mortogh died in AD. 1343 and was succeeded [as King of Thomond] by his son Mahon Moinmoy, who died in 1367 [some sources says 1369] and was the ancestor of the Thomond and Inchiquin branches of the family. [Mahon's] brother Turlogh Mael (The Bald) succeeded him, who was the ancestor of the Waterford O’Briens. [Turlogh Mael] was deposed in AD. 1370 in favour of his nephew Brian Cathan Aonagh; very little information is given of [Brian] by the Annalists (Annals of the Four Masters), and he died in AD. 1399. Brian Catha’s successor was his brother Conor (son of Mahon Moinmoy ... from [Conor] descend the “Pobblebrien and Aherlow O’Briens” also called “Carrigogunnell O’Briens”. From Conor’s younger brother, Teige Baccach, descend the “O’Briens of Ballyardan”. [Conor] was succeeded in AD. 1426 by his nephew Teige na Glamore."

In support of Teresa's comment: Agreed that Mahon is Maud's father. I've just double-checked the O'Brien pedigree and uploaded the image here. Maud is 17 generations below Brian Boroimhe (died 1014), Monarch of Ireland. Maud's father is Mahon O'Brien. It's her grandfather who is Donough O'Brien.
Maud's parents are shown as Mahon O'Brien and Elizabeth O'Brien of Ara
Maud's paternal grandparents are shown as Donough O'Brien (of Carrigogunnell & Pobble) and Margaret O'Kennedy of Abelow
