Joseph Hobson was born in Ireland.

Joseph was born about 1826. He was the son of Richard Hobson and Emma Greene.

He enlisted on 20 November 1846 with the 37th Foot. He attained the rank of Major in the Kilkenny Fusiliers Militia.

His father died in 1851.

In 1867 his brother Richard died in France, and his mother died the following year, in 1868.

Joseph lived with his brother Samuel at 19 Lombard Street, Waterford. Samuel died in 1899.

Ireland Census Event Date 31 March 1901: Living on his own at 19 Lombard Street (Waterford Urban No. 4, Waterford), Ireland. Aged 75 and single.

Occupation: No Profession Teacher or Calling. Income Derived from Dividends and Interest on Money

He passed away in 1904 at the age of about 78[1].

Death of Major Joseph Hobson.
We regret to announce the death of Major Joseph Hobson, late of the 30th Regiment, which took place yesterday (Friday) his residence, Lombard street. Major Hobson, since his retirement from the army, led a most retired life, and although he was seldom seen at public functions of any description he enjoyed a wide circle of friendship, and was popular with those who were acquainted with him. His family has long been connected with Waterford, his father, Richard Jones Hobson, being at one time Archdeacon of Waterford and Vicar-General of the Diocese. The funeral will take place on Monday at 12 o'clock for the Cemetery, John's Hill[2].[3]

His will was proved on 15 June 1904 at Waterford to Joseph William Lapham, gentleman[4]. Effects: £14,917 13s. 10d.

He also bequeathed £200 to Bridget Walsh, £100 to Henry Briggs, and £50 to Margaret Halley, of Dunmore East, Waterford. His left his property to Joseph William Lapham, who was his cousin.
