Biography

Jacob was born on July 3rd, 1860 in Dębowiec, Jasło, Galicia, Austria to father, Franciszek (Frank) Podgurski, and mother, Antonina (Antonia) Kochon.

Jacob possibly arrived in America on October 28, 1883 on the ship Wieland from Germany to New York. As he was illiterate in English, someone else wrote out his last name on the census records, possibly the census taker themselves. So Jakob Podgórski was ‏‎anglicized to Jacob Podgurski. This spelling stuck with the family for generations afterwards.

He married Madeline Brezezanski on November 21st, 1885 in Chicopee, Hampden, Massachusetts ^{[1] [2]}. Their intention was recorded on November 9th ^[3]. By 1900, the family had moved to Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island ^[4]. Jacob and Madeline had several children including Mary Osga ^[5], Joseph Podgurski ^[6], Elizabeth Nietupski ^[7], John Peter Podgurski, and Camisha Podgurski.

Madeline passed away in 1901 and Jacob remarried in Coventry, Rhode Island to Mary Stokosa Gal on January 25th, 1905 ^[8].

After the death of his second wife, Jacob moved in with his son, John, and his family in Warwick ^[9]. They all moved together to Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts around 1940 and Jacob would die there a year later on December 18th ^[10]. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery ^[11].

Notes

• Some census records state that Jacob was born in Italy.
• This 1905 Rhode Island State Census seems to refer to this Jacob, but the information is quite a mess ^[12].
• The 1935 Rhode Island State Census recorded his birth date as July 4th, 1862 ^[13].
• Find A Grave lists him as Jacob Podurski.
