Biography

1844 Paulina Henriette Söderqvist, daughter of Johanna Söderqvist, was born 10 Nov 1844 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her birth was recorded at the magnificent Hedvig Eleonora Church (see photo under Images tab). Witnesses' names were Sophia Broman and the midwife Chr. (Christina?) Åkerlund. Her mother, whose name does not appear on the church birth record, was 30 years old and lived at Riddarsgatan No. 26 in Stockholm, not far from the church. Curiously, Paulina's church birth record shows her first and middle names reversed.^[1] Paulina was baptized on 11 Nov 1844. ^[2]

1845 10 Jun Her mother wrote to the orphanage, Stora Barnhuset^[3] asking for help in caring for her child. She offered payment of "50 riskdaler" acknowledging that it was not enough. The letter, likely written (and signed ?) by someone else, with an English translation below it follows:

Oförmögen att wårda och upfostra det af mig den 10 sistlina November framfödda flickebarn Paulina Henrietta, och henne utan understöd af detta mitt barns far nödgar jag såsom den sista utväg, för erhållande af wård och skötsel om barnet, i ödmjukhet anropa Respective Directioner om tillåtelse att få det å Allmänna Barnhuset inlöst emot Femtio Riksdaler. Detta är alt hwad jag kunat sjelf åstadkomma, och har icke utan yttersta ansträngning lyckats att samla denna summa som dock, derest icke Respective Directioner förbarmande räcker mig en hjelpsam hand, är för det afsedda ändamålet otillräcklig.

Under den ljufwa förtröstan, att REspective Directioner, ömmande, om icke för min, åtminstone för mitt barns nödstälda belägenhet, uppfylla denna min bön, som jag ånyo, med all den ifwer och enträgenhet, som moderskärleken förmår ingifwa .... wågar jag härmed bifoga barnets sedel, samt mina skrifte- och tjenstebetyg, Tilläggande slutligen uttryckligen af min öfwertygelse om den angenäma känsla af sällhet, som med åtfölja en så god gerning, som den, att hafwa af 2ne medmenniskor i tillfälle att wara sig sjelva och andra nyttiga, som i motsatt fall äro hemfallne åt nöden och eländet. English translation:

Unable to care for and nurture the child Paulina Henrietta, who was born to me last November 10, and without having the support of my child's father, I need as the last resort, to obtain care and care for the child. I humbly ask the Directors for permission to get it at Allmänna Barnhuset paid for by the enclosed 50 Riksdaler. This is all I have been able to gather by myself without the utmost effort and succeeded in amassing this sum which, however, unless the Directors will mercifully give me a helpful hand, is insufficient for the intended purpose.

Under the sweet confidence that the Directors, tenderly, if not for my, at least for my child's, distressed situation, will fulfill this my prayer, which I again, with all the eagerness and perseverance that motherly love is able to instill .... I hereby dare enclose the child's banknote, as well as my writings and service grades, Additionally, finally, expressly of my conviction of the pleasant feeling of happiness, which accompanies such a good deed as that of having two fellow human beings in opportunity to warn oneself and others useful, who, in the opposite case, are accustomed to distress and misery.

1845 On 26 Jun or 1 Jul eight-month-old Pauline was admitted to the care of Allmänna Barnhuset. The cost for her annual maintenance was 52 (riksdaler?). The roll names her mother as "Maidservant Johanna Söderqvist."

1846-1850 Her orphanage maintenance record shows entries until the end of the second quarter of 1850 (29 Jun 1850), when Paulina would have been about five and a half years old. It was at this time Paulina was likely sent to the foster home of Hemmanagaren Fredriks Jan Andersson (born 1799) and his wife (Anna Greta Carlsdotter, born 1812) in Berga (name of residence), Husby parish, Hedemore deanery, Kopparbergs county, Sweden.^[5][6]

1868 When Paulina Henrietta grew up, she served for some time in Gävle, but returned to Berga in 1868.^[7]

1869 She married Anders Gustaf Andersson 24 January 1869.^[8] Their first child was a son, born 19 June 1869 and died nameless in his third day (mentioned in the household record). Their son Axel was born 10 March 1871 and died in June 1873.^[9] Then came Eugenia Henrietta in May 1872, Ida Paulina 10 Sep 1874, Albin, 26 May 1881. Last was Hulda Linnea, born 17 Apr 1884 and dead 31 Aug the same year.^[10]

1880 Paulina lived in Smedby, Husby parish, Hedemore Deanery in Kopparberg County, Sweden with her husband Anders Gustaf Hjort and her two daughters, Eugenia Henrietta and Ida Paulina. The family seems to be living near Anders's father and mother. The census list looks like this:

1885 Paulina Henrietta died from consumption ("lungsot") 1 June 1885 in Husby, Sweden where she was buried at Husby church.^[13]
