Augustus was born in what is today Solingen, Germany, 20 Dec 1829.[1] He was the son of John Daniel Knight and Hannah Maria Knight.[1]
Augustus, a resident of St. Louis, married, in Framingham, Massachusetts, Fanny Colburn French, of Framingham, 17 Feb 1857.[2] They had four sons in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.[3] They had, first, a son, Daniel, 15 Jul 1860.[4] After the start of the American Civil War, they had another son, Newell, 25 Apr 1862,[4] an event punctuated by their loss of Daniel, to unknown cause, 13 Sep 1862, at age two.[4] Later in the Civil War, they had a third son, Harry, 18 Feb 1864.[5] After the War, they had their fourth and final son, Eugene, 17 Jan 1866.[6]
Augustus "was a wholesale dealer and manufacturer of boots and shoes, and sole owner of Fiske, Knight & Company of St. Louis."[7]
