Biography

The daughter of John Kelley and Missouri (Gifford) Kelley, Willie was born in Wayne County in 1890. Her family lived in Wayne County, Tennessee.[1]

Willie married 'Alford Taylor, the son of William Denison Wilson and Millie Elizabeth Pitts, marrying in Wayne County on December 20, 1908[2] and having two children together. They made their home in Civil District 1 of Wayne County where, in 1910, her husband worked as a farm laborer who "worked out."[3]

Widowed in 1913, Willie remarried, marrying Houston Atwell, the son of Robert Atwell and Nancy Jane Quillen, having one son together. The marriage did not last, ending in divorce.

Willie married a third time, marrying Henry Hodges. Henry had been married previously to Nancy F. Parker, with whom he had nine children, divorcing. Willie and Henry married in Florence, Alabama on August 20, 1927.[4] They made their home in Florence, Alabama where, in 1930, neither Willie nor Henry listed work on the census enumeration.[5] By 1940, Henry was working on a road crew.[6]

After the death of her third husband, Willie lived in Florence, residing with her son, Robert Atwell, and his family.[7]

Marwillis Hodges passed away in Florence[citation needed] at the age of 77 and is buried at Florence Cemetery.[8]
