Biography

Alois Spenner has roots in the region now known as Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Sergeant Alois Spenner served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Feb 1, 1862
Mustered out: Jan 24, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 6 Regiment, Kansas Calvary

Alois Spenner was born and baptized on 16 September 1834 in the local Catholic church at Wehr, Schopfheim, Baden located[1][2] in southern Germany. Alois was the only child of Joseph and Maria (Leber) Spenner to reach maturity. He was orphaned at the age of 5 by the deaths of both mother and father and was then cared for by loving relatives until he reached adulthood.

The German Revolutions of 1848-49 were a chaotic period in Baden. This most surely prompted Alois to leave Baden to seek opportunities for a better life in America. At the age of twenty he sought permission to emigrate from Baden by the local officials and a Tagfahrt notice was published and a passport was issued to him 10 August 1854.[3] Alois sailed for America departing from Le Havre, France aboard the ship Far West. He was passenger #303 on the ship manifest of 318 total passengers who arrived at the Port of New York on 23 October 1854.[4]

Not long after his arrival in New York, and having no means of support, Alois enlisted as a soldier in the Army of the United States of America on the 12th day of December, 1854. His name was Americanized to Charles Spenner and he was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, having a fair complexion and being 5 feet 5 inches tall. His occupation at the time of his enlistment was a clerk. He was to serve for a period of 5 years and was assigned to the 2 U.S. Artillery Regiment, Company H at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Territory as a private.[5]

After the expiration of his term of service, Alois met the widow Mrs. Anna Bauer, nee Schmidt and they were married on 8 August 1860 in Junction City, Davis co., Kansas by the Rev. Charles Stuckman and this is where he and Anna began their family. [6][7] To this union, Alois and Anna had three children, two of whom grew to maturity. They are:

  1. Emaline Spenner, born 21 April 1867 in Dickinson co., Kansas
  2. Arnold Spenner, born 22 March 1871 in Dickinson co., Kansas
  3. George Spenner, born 20 March 1873 and died in 1890.

Anna had the following children from her previous marriage:

  1. Charles Bauer, born 29 March 1855 in Saxony.
  2. Reinholdt Bauer, born 25 January 1856 in Wheeling, West Virginia.
  3. Rosalia Bauer, born 11 April 1858 in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Alois and his young family were residing in Junction City, Kansas when the American Civil War erupted in April 1861. It was here that he joined the Grand Army of the Republic enlisting in the 6th Regiment Kansas Cavalry, Company F on 1 February 1862. This regiment was mostly employed scouting the country and watching the movements of the enemy. The scouting parties frequently engaged bushwhackers, or small detachments from the rebel army. Alois served his country faithfully and well. He rose to the rank of Sergeant during his period of service and was mustered out of service on 24 January 1865 at Clarksville, Arkansas. [8] Alois had also applied for and was granted a pension, certificate # 341748 for his Civil War service.

After the war ended, Alois and his family made their home in Dickinson county Kansas where he farmed on 160 acres in Union and Liberty Townships.[9][10][11] In 1895 he and Anna moved to Major county, Oklahoma Territory.[12] Shortly thereafter, Anna died in February 1896. [13] Alois afterwards lived with his son Arnold and family in Woods and Major County Oklahoma[14] [15]until 1 January 1917 when Alois passed away at the age of 82. [16] Both he and Anna are buried in Forrest Cemetery, Ringwood, Major co., OK. [17]
