Biography

Philipp Boos was born in Ehr, Rhineland, on 15 January 1823. He was the second-youngest son of Johann Boos and Maria Anna Petry. Philipp first married to Maria Anna Preum (also known as Prim) in nearby Koblenz on 3 April 1852, when he was 29 years old. According to family lore, Maria Anna died either in or shortly after childbirth, and their child also did not survive; this was the catalyst for Philipp's immigration to the United States soon after.

Philipp ultimately settled in the German diasporic community of Detroit, Michigan. Family stories suggest that he met the Buhr family in Detroit and lived and worked on their farm, culminating in his marriage to daughter Anna Maria Buhr on May 10, 1858, at Assumption Grotto Church in Detroit, located roughly 2.5 miles east of the Buhr homestead.

The couple had nine children together, six of whom survived to adulthood:

  1. Phillip (1859-1859)
  2. John Jacob (1860-1860)
  3. Michael (1862)
  4. Anna Margaret (1863)[1]
  5. John Peter (1867)[2]
  6. Anthony (1869)[3][4]
  7. Peter (1872-1872)[5]
  8. Joseph (1874)[6][7]
  9. Peter John (1877)[8]

At the beginning of their marriage, Philipp and his wife continued to live in a cabin he built on the Buhr farm as more children joined the brood.[9] Later, they remained on property on Van Dyke Road near the newly-created Mt. Olivet Cemetery[10][11] (which was partially built on land previously owned by the Buhrs).

Philipp passed away on January 5, 1897, in Detroit.[12] He was a week and a half shy of his 74nd birthday. Philipp and his wife are said to have been buried near the family cabin, along with their deceased children and later reinterred at Mt. Olivet cemetery in the plot marked with a small "Boos" stone.

Surname pronunciation

The Boos surname was pronounced /boʊz/.

Research notes

  • Some trees have Philip's father as a Mathias Boos, and his parents as Mathias Boos and Joanna Orth. It appears that Mathias/Joanna's names come from a couple who lived in Eisenschmitt, Rhineland, who had children in the 1780s and 1790s.[13][14][15][16][17] This is a conflation of two families.
  • Other trees have Philip as the son of Johann Martin Boos and Maria Catharina Seipp of Langen. This is incorrect despite some DNA matches for Philip's great-grandchildren through Maria Catharina Seipp's ancestors, which are likely instead relatives through Philip's wife's Bohr family. Per negative searches in FHL film #102117089, Philip is not the son of this couple. The Langen matches are likely instead through Anna Maria Buhr's family.
  • The names of Philip's parents (Johann Boos and Maria Anna Petri), as well as the information about his first marriage to Maria Anna Prim, come from Philip's second marriage record to Anna Maria Buhr, the earliest known document definitively linked to this Philip Boos in America.
  • Philip's date of birth (January 15) comes from recollections of his great-granddaughter MHJ.
