In his mid-twenties, Samuel moved to Ryegate, Montana where he was working as a farm laborer and a drayman for the city of Rygate. When he registered for the WWI draft in 1917, he was described as medium height and build with light brown eyes and hair.[4][5]
Samuel married Nellie Gladys Scott on 1 March 1920 in Roundup, Montana.[6] They continued living in Ryegate and by 1930, Samuel was working as a lumberman in a lumber yard. They owned their home, which was valued at 1,200 USD, and owned radio.[7]
By 1940, Samuel had returned to farming and the family was living in a house on a farm in Ryegate that they owned. They were living next door to Samuel's son Eugene. Their farm was valued at 1,500 USD.[8]
