When John registered for the draft for World War I, it was noted that he was physically disqualified and not able to do any type of work.[3] John never married. He appears to be mentally disabled as he never learned to read or write. He had extended family staying close at home throughout his life, living with his father and an elderly aunt until they passed on. [4] Later he had a widowed niece with her children staying with him. His brother and sister were close neighbors.[5] Then by 1940, the siblings had all regrouped were living together, though he outlived both George and Martha by many years..[6]
He was living with his sister's son, Jeff and his family, in 1950 on Peanut Road in Limestone, Arkansas.[8]
He died on 22 April 1965 in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas, aged 82. He was buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Ozark.[9]
