Walter was born on 17 January 1922 in Ellsworth, Kansas,[1] the son of Fred Choitz and Lena Pflughoeft. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, Kansas, on 5 February 1922.[2]
By June of 1942 Walter had moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he was employed by the South Bend Lathe Works.[3][4][5]
During World War II Walter served in the US Navy, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.[6]
On 25 April 1946 Walter was united in marriage with Mary Jane Steinke at Mishawaka, Indiana. The couple first lived in South Bend, Indiana.[7] They had two children: Nancy Lynn (b. 1947) and Paul Steven (b. 1951).
By 1986 Walter and Mary had moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, and in 1992 they were living in Shoreview, a second-ring suburb of Saint Paul.[8]
Walter died on 8 May 2009 at Shoreview, Minnesota.[9][10]
