CARRIE LOUISE CODDINGTON, WELL-KNOWN TEACHER, DIES --- Miss Carrie Louise Coddington, known by many in San Bernardino as a student, a teacher, English-department head and friend, died Tuesday night at a San Bernardino hospital. She was 77. Born in Riverside, she and her family moved to San Bernardino when she was six years old, and she and her "sister, May, were graduated from high school in 1899. -- ADVANCES RAPIDLY -- She began her career as a grade school teacher at Fourth St. School in 1905. Moving over to San Bernardino High School, she went from English teacher to department head and dean of girls at the same school from which she was graduated. She was the second member of the English Department at San Bernardino High School, taking her job in what was then a three-story brick building at 8th and E Sts. She was responsible for the founding of the present high school newspaper, The Tyro Weekly, and served as its adviser for many years. She was also adviser of The Tyro Annual. -- RETIRES IN 1944 -- Illness forced her to retire from the teaching profession in 1944, after a career that was spent almost entirely in the same school. During her 37 years at the high school, she watched its enrollment grow from 500 to more than 2,000. In 1947, she was given "A tribute to a successful teacher" by the Zeta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, of which she was an honorary member. On the fifteenth anniversary of the high school, Miss Coddington was feted by the Board of Education, and named "best teacher." A scholarship is given in Miss Coddington's name each year at San Bernardino High School by the City Teacher's Club. It was first presented for excellence in the English field, and has since become a general scholarship. A member of the Congregational Church of San Bernardino for more than 50 years, Miss Coddington was active in the Brewster Circle and the Monday Forum. -- SERVICES TOMORROW -- She is survived by her sister, May Coddington who served as City Librarian for 28 years; two children (adopted by the Coddington sisters), George of San Francisco and Mrs. Ottis Scott, San Bernardino; and a foster daughter, Mrs. Virginia Imler, of North Hollywood. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Grove Colonial Mortuary. Dr. George W. Haskell of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery. The family requests that donations be made to a special fund to be formed at Congregational Church. (The San Bernardino County Sun (San Bernardino, California) 13 Mar 1958, Thu Page 15)
