Biography

Frederick William Carysford Bowles was born 22 January and baptised 11 February 1818 at St Peter’s (Church of Ireland), Dublin, the son of Charles Proby Bowles and Catherine Hanly.[1]

In November 1829 Catherine Bowles offered a reward for knowledge of her ex-husband’s whereabouts, and those of two of their children he had “secreted in London and on the Continent “. The son was described as being tall for his age, “of a dark colour, chesnut (sic) colour hair, hazel eyes, and ten years of age.”[2] Bowles replied that he was living with his children at 30 Rue Nauve de la Ferme des Mathurins, Paris.[3]

As Frederick, son of Charles Proby Bowles Esq, he was educated at Winchester School.[4]

Frederick, eldest son of Charles Proby Bowles of Dublin Esq, matriculated at Oriel College Oxford on 1 June 1837 aged 19. He graduated BA, 3 February 1842.[5]

He was a party to his sister’s post-nuptial settlement in 1839, being then described as “Frederick Bowles late of Winchester in the County of Hants Esq and now of Oriel College Oxford”.[6]

As Frederick Augustus, first son of Charles Proby Bowles, late Captain 26th Foot, and Catherine Henley (sic), he was admitted to the King’s Inns, Dublin, Easter term 1843 and was called to the Bar in Michaelmas term 1844.[7]

At the time of the 1851 census he was visiting his sister’s family at Holdenhurst, Hampshire, described as Frederick Bowles, aged 30 and unmarried, a barrister, born in Dublin.[8]

Administration of the estate of Charles Proby Bowles was granted to his son Frederick Augustus Bowles, 26 November 1856.[9]

In January 1858, a case before the Insolvent Debtors Court referred to a bill for £200 accepted by Mr Frederick Bowles of Clontarf Castle; “Mr. Bowles was not now to be found”.[10]
