John Sherwood Dixon (better known as Sherwood Dixon) was an American politician from Illinois. He was Lieutenant Governor of Illinois from 1949-1943.

John was born 19 Jun 1896 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. He was the son of Henry Dixon and Margaret Casey.

In 1900 he was living in Dixon Township Dixon city Ward 2 & 4, Lee, Illinois.[1] The household included Henry Dixon 30, wife Margaret Dixon 27, son Sherwood Dixon 4, daughter Marion Dixon 2, infant son Jerome Dixon, and sister-in-law Mary Casey 29. Henry and Margaret had been married 4 years. Margaret was the mother of 3 children, all living. Henry was a lawyer. Mary was single.

In 1910 he was living in Dixon Ward 5, Lee, Illinois.[2] The household included Henry S Dixon 39, wife Margaret Dixon 39, son Sherwood Dixon 13, daughter Marian Dixon 12, son Jerome Dixon 10, son Robert Dixon 8 and sister-in-law Marie Casey 41. Henry and Margaret had been married 14 years. Margaret was the mother of 4 children, all living. Henry was a lawyer with his own practice. Mary was single.

He was a Private in Company I 332 Infantry from 5 Jan 1918 to 3 May 1919.[3][4]

In 1920 he was living in Dixon, Lee, Illinois.[5] The household included Henry S Dixon 50, wife Margaret Dixon 50, son Sherwood Dixon 33, daughter Marian Dixon 21, son Jerome Dixon 19, and son Robert Dixon 19. Henry was a lawyer. Sherwood was single and was also a lawyer.

Heirs Of Henry Dixon were widow Margaret C Dixon, son Sherwood Dixon, daughter Marion E Dixon Van Nuys, son Jerome F Dixon, and son Robert A Dixon. All were living in Dixon, Illinois except Jerome living in Rockford, Illinois.[6]

In 1930 he was living in Dixon, Lee, Illinois.[7] The household included Margaret C Dixon 59, son Sherwood Dixon 34 and son Robert A Dixon 28. Margaret was widowed. Both Sherwood and Robert were single and were attorneys in a law office.

Sherwood Dixon and Helen Margaret Cahill were married 2 Sep 1933 in St. Joseph, Indiana.[8]

In 1940 he was living in Dixon, Lee, Illinois.[9] The household included Sherwood Dixon 43, wife Helen Dixon 32, son Henry Dixon 5, daughter Mary Dixon 4, son William Dixon 3, daughter Louise Dixon 1, son James Dixon 8 months, and maid Ida Topper 21. He was a lawyer in private practice. Margaret Dixon lived next door.

He was a graduate of Notre Dame, and remained with the Illinois National Guard and was a Lieutenant Colonel by 1941. He was Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, under Governor Adlai Stevenson II, from 10 January 1949, to 13 January 9953.

He died 17 May 1973 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois[10][11] and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Dixon, Lee County, Illinois.
