Biography
Margaret (Harvey) Sutherland was born in Scotland.
Margaret was born on 12 February 1863 at Inverchaolain, Argyll, Scotland[1]. She was the fourth daughter of George Harvey and Margaret Oliver, named for her mother.
In 1871 she had moved to Melness, Tongue, Sutherland where her father was a sheep farm manager[2]. She was living with her parents, George (43) and Margaret (41), seven siblings - James (16), Magdaline (14), George (12), Jessie (9), William (5), Elizabeth (3) and Isabella (10 Months), and a domestic servant, Margaret Borthwick (17), her cousin. She was a scholar aged 7.
She married Donald Sutherland on 17 December 1886 at Tongue, Sutherland[3]. They had four children.
In 1891 she was living with her husband Donald (a clothier assistant aged 27) and two children - Maggie (3) and Jessie (3) - at Talmine, Tongue, Sutherland[10]. She was aged 27. Her place of birth was incorrectly listed.
Her husband died in 1896[11]. In 1901 she was a crofter aged 37 living at the old house used as a store, Tongue, Sutherland with her four children - Margaret (13), Jessie (12), George (8) and Mary (7)[12].
Margaret (Harvey) Sutherland migrated from Scotland to New Zealand.
She and her children migrated to New Zealand sometime between 1901 and 1910. She settled with her brother William S Harvey at Weber, Dannevirke.
Margaret died on 14 March 1925[13] at Dannevirke, Hawke's Bay where her death was registered in the first quarter[14]. She was buried in Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke[15], the same cemetery where her sister Jessie Fox was buried.
Research Notes
No record of Margaret has yet been found for the 1881 census.
Online trees give conflicting information about where Margaret went after 1901 including staying in Scotland, going to the United States and going to New Zealand. There is no Statutory death registration for a Margaret Harvey/Sutherland in Scotland between 1901 and 1963 for a birth in 1863. This is why the migration to New Zealand has been accepted as the most likely, confirmed by the marriage of two of her daughters, Margaret[16] and Jessie[17] in New Zealand.
