Biography

Robert Crum was a Tennessean.

Robert Crum was a Missourian.

Robert was born on 5 September 1828 in Tennessee.^[1] In 1850, Robert was 22 years old and living next door to his parents in Greene County, Tennessee. As noted on the census, Robert could not read or write.^[2]Two years later, on 12 August, Robert married Elizabeth Hutchison.^[3] By 1860, Robert and Elizabeth were living in Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri with their four children: ^[4] Rachel, 6; John, 5; Mary, 3; and Joseph, under 1. The family must have moved from Tennessee sometime between 1854 and 1855, as Rachel was born in Tennessee and John was born in Missouri. Robert is listed as a farmer, with real estate valued at $300 and personal estate valued at $684.

Robert and Elizabeth had another child, George, born in 1864. Elizabeth died in 1869; Robert married again in 1872.*

The 1900 census shows him living with his second wife, Harriet, in Jackson Township. Maries County, Missouri. He could now read but still not write. Robert also owned a farm, which was mortgaged. At that time, he was 72 and had been married for 28 years. Robert was still farming.^[5]Robert passed away on 24 March 1906 in Maries County, Missouri.^[1]
