Biography

Thirza Snell Rogers was born on 13 August 1833, in Starks, Somerset, Maine.^[1][2] Her parents were Cyrus and Julia Anne (Greenleaf) Rogers.^[3]

The Thirza given name came from the William Greenleaf family, also of the Starks area. William's daughter Thirza married Eleazer Snell, and William's daughter Julia Anne married Thirza's father Cyrus Rogers. Thirza Snell was the married name of this Thirza's aunt on her mother's side.

Her paternal immigrant Rogers line starts with Jeremiah Rogers, who appears in the Colonial record about 1650. Her mother Julia Anne's maiden name was Greenleaf, and that line goes back to the immigrant Edmund Greenleaf, who arrived in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1637.

On the 1850 census Thirza is listed as a school teacher, age 17, living with her parents.^[4]

Thriza married Hiram Crocker Brown on 4 December 1850, in Starks, Somerset, Maine. ^[5][6] The town marriage record shows that Thirza was married by her father, Cyrus Rogers.^[7]

The three oldest of these children are named on page 174 of Starks town records ^[13]

Thirza's husband Hiram died in 1867. The 1870 census lists her occupation as a seamstress.^[14] Thirza married Rufus Luce in October 1870.^[15] However, that marriage ended in a divorce.^[16] On the 1880 census Thirza is listed as Thirza Luce, divorced, with the household including Burke Luce, an 8-year-old son of Rufus by a prior relationship, along with her own sons, Wesley and Arthur.^[17]

Thirza died on 10 March 1909, in Hopkinton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, while at the home of her daughter Eldora ("Dora") Stewart. She is buried in the Frederic Cemetery in Starks.^[18] She has a headstone. Find A Grave: Memorial #118723316
