The hand of death has fallen very heavily upon the Manning during the last few days, and a number of the oldest of our residents are being called away. Following closely upon the news of the death of a former prominent Taree resident, came the passing away at about 5 o'clock on Monday morning of Mr John Ellis Tonkin, of Pultney-street Taree, who had lived on the Manning for some fifty years and had been a resident in Taree for on toward thirty of them. The late Mr Tonkin was amongst our oldest citizens being aged 70 years and 9 months. He was a native of Sydney, Mr Tonkin went to Cundletown first of all and then came on to live at Taree, where he carried on business as an undertaker, contractor, and cabinet-maker. He was a very fine tradesman and was looked upon as an authority in building matters. He was always straight in business and could be relied upon to give the best workmanship. He was a man of a quiet and retiring disposition, and did not mix in any public affairs, but by reason of his long connection with the district and his business associations, he was well known in Taree and this part of the Manning. At one time he carried out a good deal of building work, and for many years was the only undertaker in Taree. Of late however, the deceased had retired more into active life, and for the past nine months he had been sick, heart trouble being the cause of his illness and ultimately bringing about his death. He was attended by both Drs Gormley and Stokes. He was taken seriously ill about a week ago, and this proved to be his final attack. The funeral was to take place yesterday (Tuesday) at the Woolla Cemetery. Canon Phillips was to conduct the service, and Mr S.A. Levick of Cundle had charge of the funeral arrangements. Deceased leaves a widow, three sons, and four daughters, with whom much sympathy is felt. [5]
