John Charles VanNorstran was born on July 30, 1922 in Morgan, Tennessee, United States, son of Fred VanNorstran (1890–1968) and Estella Charity Isral (1900–1980).

Johnnie (20) married Lucy Marie Bunch (16) (born on January 17, 1926 in Fork Mountain, Anderson, Tennessee) in 1943. Their daughter was Deloris Mae VanNorstran (1944–2016).

Johnnie died on December 1, 1982 in Morgan, aged 60.
