Biography

Wilbur Murphy has Appalachian roots, in Kentucky.

Wilbur Leslie Murphy was born on 11 May 1920 at Middletown, Butler county, Ohio. His parents are Willard & Sarah Murphy.

In the 1930 census Leslie (age 9) and siblings Audrey (f. age 16), Eunice (age 14), Ruth (age 12) and Gerald (age 7) were in the home of their parents, Willard Murphy (age 38) and Sarah Murphy (age 35) at Lemon, Butler, Ohio, United States.^[1]

In the 1940 census Leslie (age 20) and siblings Gerald (age 17) and Donald (age 9) were in the home of their parents, Millard Murphy (age 48) and Sarah Murphy (age 44) at Lemon Township, Butler, Ohio, United States.^[2]

He went by both Wilbur and Leslie. He attended Lemon-Monroe High School. A junior photo is seen in yearbook records of 1939. ^[3] WIlbur was an excellent athlete, excelling in track and field. A clipping from the 1939 yearbook follows: "Leslie started the season as a half-miler but when the coach made the suggestion, he changed to a miler. He has been turning in very good time, and with Reed Banks as a partner, he should bring in some firsts in the future meets". ^[4]

Wilbur joined the Army Air Corp in World War II at Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio, United States.on 11 Nov 1942 and became a B24 pilot.^[5]

He married Marie Blanche Borders shortly after World War II - likely between 1945 and 1947. Wilbur is not listed in the 1944 Middletown city directory but he and Marie are seen together residing at 134 Manhattan Ave in the city directory of 1947. ^[6] Wilbur was a factory worker at the American Rolling Mill (Steel) Company (ARMCo). He and Marie had two children. An infant daughter died in 1949. A son is still living. Wilbur is seen in Middletown city directories from 1951 to 1958. ^{[7] [8]} It is unknown why Marie was not listed with her husband.

Wilbur and Marie are seen in public records, residing at Middletown.^{[9] [10]}

Wilbur (age 64) passed away on 3 Oct 1984.^[11] He was buried at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler county, Ohio. ^[12]

Marie was an employee of Harrison Insurance, a volunteer at Middletown Regional Hospital and was active in the formation of Miltonville Fire Department. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease in her latter years and passed away on 5 Jul 2013 at Madison Township, Butler county, Ohio. She is buried at Woodside cemetery with husband Wilbur.^[13] Marie's obituary is not appended to the Find-A-Grave record. It can be viewed at Legacy.com. ^[14]
