Biography

Mahlon was born in 1837. He was the son of Moses Daniels and his 3rd wife Amey Mowrey. [1] [2] In 1850, Mahlon (age 12) was living with his parents and two brothers in Blackstone, Massachusetts. [3]

He married 1st Sylvia Ann Alexander on March 19, 1857. The marriage took place in Blackstone, Massachusetts. Mahlon was 19 years old and Sylvia was 17. She was born on August 14, 1839. She is the daughter of Daniel Alexander and Abigail Thayer. Mahlon’s occupation in 1857 was Farmer. [4] [5] At the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, taken on July 18, 1860, Mahlon (age 22) and Sylvia (age 20) were living in Franklin, Massachusetts with their three children: Janette [Jeanette Amelia] Daniels (age 2), Amelia Daniels (age 4), and Cora [Cora Jane] Daniels (9 months old). Sylvia’s mother Abigail Alexander (age 49) was living with the Daniels family. Mahlon’s occupation was Farmer. Note that the Amelia Daniels who was 4 years old in 1860 is not listed on future census records. Perhaps she passed away or perhaps she was not a child of Mahlon and Sylvia’s but some relative living with them in 1860. [6] Mahlon registered for the Civil War draft on July 1, 1863 in Massachusetts. He was 26 years old. He was married and a farmer. [7] In the 1865 Massachusetts state census, taken on May 1, 1865, Mahlon (age 27) and Sylvia (age 25) were living in Uxbridge, Massachusetts with their four children: Jeanette Daniels (7), Sarah [Cora] J. Daniels (5), Nellie E. Daniels (4), and Abby M. Daniels (7 months old). Sylvia’s mother Abigail Alexander (age 52) was still living with the Daniels family. [8] Mahlon was listed among those chosen to serve, if needed, in the Militia for the Town of Uxbridge. The document is dated May 1, 1867 and the original image is available on Ancestry.com. [9] In the 1870 U.S. Census, taken on June 2, 1870, Mahlon (age 33) and Sylvia (age 30) were living in Cumberland, Rhode Island with their six children: Jeanette Daniels (12), Cora J. Daniels (11), Nellie E. Daniels (9), Abby Daniels (5), Edna M. Daniels (3), and Clara B. Daniels (1). Sylvia’s mother Abigail Alexander (age 57) was still living with the Daniels family. Mahlon’s occupation was Farmer. [10] Sylvia passed away in Blackstone, Massachusetts on November 25, 1871. [11] She is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Mendon, Massachusetts. [12]

Mahlon married 2nd Mary J. Campbell on February 19, 1874. The marriage took place in Blackstone. Mahlon was 36 years old and Mary was 25. She is the daughter of James and Eliza Campbell, according to her marriage records. However, her daughter Lillian gave her grandfather’s name as William instead of James on Mary’s death record. There were many other Mary Campbells and Mary Daniels living at the same time, so records have to be carefully checked and compared in order to make sure individuals do not get mixed up. For example, some records give Mary’s place of birth as St. John’s, New Brunswick, while other sources say Nova Scotia. [13] [14] At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, taken on June 12, 1880, Mahlon (age 48) and Mary (age 28) were living in Blackstone with three of Sylvia’s children: Jennie [Jeanette] Daniels (20), Edna M. Daniels (13), and Mina B. Daniels (11); plus, two of Mary’s children: Lillian S. Daniels (5) and Andrew W. Daniels (1). Mahlon’s occupation was Farmer. [15] At the time of the 1885 Rhode Island state census, taken on June 1, 1885, Mahlon (age 53) was living in Ward 5, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. His occupation was Farm Laborer. Only males are listed on that page of the state census. Many, many pages later is found the listing for Lillian S. Daniels (age 11). Her mother Mary J. Daniels (age 33) is on a different page of the state census. Very likely, her son Andrew Daniels is on some other page of the state census, by himself. [16] It is not known why the family moved from Blackstone, Massachusetts to Pawtucket, RI. However, Mahlon is listed in the Pawtucket City Directory, starting in 1887 and all the way through 1897. These images are available on Ancestry.com. From 1887 to 1892 he lived in a house at 219 East Avenue and his occupation was “local express.” Today, that address is near the intersection of East Avenue and Pawtucket Avenue, and just two blocks from the Seekonk River. His address changed in the 1893 Directory to 293 East Avenue. His address changed again in the 1894 Directory to 146 Sisson Street. It changed a third time in 1895 to 47 South Union Street. He was still at the 47 South Union Street address in 1897 and his occupation was the same. Today, that address is on the corner of South Union and Park Place West, and it is occupied by an apartment building. [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25]

Mahlon passed away in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on January 30, 1899. According to his death record, he was 61 years, 4 months, and 15 days old. He died of tuberculosis of the lungs. He was married and a farmer. [26] Mahlon is buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI. [27]

The Daniels family continued to live at the 47 South Union Street address, in Pawtucket’s Ward 4, after Mahlon’s death. In 1900 Mary was 49 years old, son Andrew W. Daniels was 21 and single, and son Elmer R. Daniels was 18 and single. [28] Sometime after 1900, the Daniels family members moved to different locations within the city of Pawtucket, according to the City Directories available on Ancestry.com. Mary passed away on January 8, 1930. Her place of death was given as 38 Maynard Street, Pawtucket, RI, which was the residence of her daughter Mrs. Lillian O’Brien. Mary’s age was 79. Burial was in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Pawtucket. This information was provided by Mary’s daughter Lillian O’Brien at the time of Mary’s passing. [29] [30] [31]
