Biography

James McCargo is a part of US Black heritage.

James was born about 1891 in Halifax County, Virginia. He was the son of Beverly McCargo and Mary Wilborn. His mother died before 1899, and he and his sister were raised by their McCargo grandparents in Halifax where the family farmed. James married Lena Jones between 1910 and 1920; in 1920 they were living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1930 they had moved to Stone Harbor, Cape May County, New Jersey and had 4 children. James is shown as widowed in the 1940 census; he is living with 6 children and working as a sandstone gardener. He appears to have married again by 1942 to Ethel. He passed away in 1973 in Stone Harbor and is buried in House of Ruth Cemetery in Whitesboro, New Jersey.
