R. Bernice Leonard writes in "Twig and Turf" that she was raised by her uncle Jonathon Leonard and his wife Mary Frances, nee Wright. [2]
She was married to Stephen Edward Merrick, son of Matthias and Harriet Barnes Merrick, on 29 October 1878, in Oxford, Talbot County, Maryland. [3]
They had at least two children: Alice Ellena Merrick and Stephen Earle Merrick.
She died on 16 NOV 1934, and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. [1]

William and Sarah (Leonard) Cryer, was born in Bambury Neck, near Trappe, Maryland on December 14th, 1850. One of a large family of brothers and sisters, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Jonathan and Mary Frances (Wright) Leonard, who, having no childen of their own, opened their home to the homeless children of their relatives (Jonathan's sister's children). In deference to the love and kindness extended to her, Alice adopted 'Leonard' as her middle name becoming 'Alice Leonard Cryer'.
