Biography

Abigail Root was born on 16 October 1777 "near Hillsdale on the line between New York and Massachusetts," United States to Joshua Root III and Bethiah Dewey. "She was the fourth born out of ten children, all of whom, with one exception, lived to be upwards of seventy years of age."^[1]

Abigail married Garrett Burgett in 1796, and they lived together sixty-eight years, until his passing. They had five children:

• Peter Burgett (Who married Sally Owen)
• Mercy Burgett (who married John Mahan)
• Lucina Burgett (who remained single)
• Laura Burgett (who married Van Renselaer Thompson)

In 1800, Abigail likely lived in Garrett's household in Oxford, Chenango, New York, United States. Also in the household was 1 male and 1 female, both under age 10. They lived near her father's household. ^[3]

On 28 May 1815, Abigail and Garrett moved to Farmington, Warren County, Pennsylvania, United States with their children. With the exception of a few years, they lived on the same farm. ^[4]

In 1850, Abigail and Garret were living in Pine Grove Township, Warren, Pennsylvania, United States with their daughter, Lucina. Their son, Peter, lived next door. ^[5]

Abigail's husband, Garret passed away in 1862.

In 1870, Abigail lived in Farmington Township, Warren, Pennsylvania, United States with her daughter, Lucina. ^[7]

On 16 October 1873, Abigail's family, friends, and neighbors gathered at her grandson's residence in Farmington, Warren County, Pennsylvania, United States to celebrate her 96th birthday. Her four living children were present: Peter and wife Sally Owen of Farmington, Mercy and husband John Mahan of Farmington, Lucina of Farmington, and Laura and husband Van Renselaer Thompson of Pine Grove. Also in attendance were her cousin, Abram Pier, with some of his family and descendants of her two brothers, Aaron and Zadoc. At the time, Abigail was said to have had eighteen grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren. ^[8]

Abigail passed away in 1874 and is buried at Foster Cemetery in Lander, Warren County, Pennsylvania, United States. ^[9]
