Biography

European Aristocracy
Assheton Curzon was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Assheton, first Baron Curzon of Penn, first Viscount Curzon of Penn[1] alias Assheton Curzon, 1st Viscount Curzon of Penn, co Buckingham[2]

Assheton was born on 2 February, 1729 [now 1730].[2] [3] As he was baptised at St George's, Hanover Square, London, England,[2] on 28 February the same year,[4] he was probably born at London.

He was the third but second surviving son and youngest child of Sir Nathaniel Curzon Bart of Kedleston, Derbyshire,[3] and his wife, Mary Assheton.[2] Mary was a daughter and coheir of Sir Ralph Assheton of Middleton, Lancashire, baronet, and his first wife, Mary Vavasour.[2]

Assheton attended Brasenose College, Oxford, matriculating on 6 February, 1746/7, and was created a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) on 2 July, 1754.[2]

In 1756, he inherited Penn Manor, Buckinghamshire, from his grandmother, Sarah Penn. His father died on 16 November, 1758, and was succeeded by Assheton's eldest surviving brother, Nathaniel, later Baron Scarsdale.[2] Nathaniel inherited Kedleston, Derbyshire.[3] When his mother died, Assheton was executor of her will which proved 3 May, 1776.[2]

Assheton married three times, to:

  1. Esther Hanmer, daughter and heir of William Hanmer, Esq, of Iscoyd, Flintshire and his wife Elizabeth Jennens of Gopsal, Leicestershire,[3] on 21 February, 1756, at St George's, Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London; Esther died on 21 July, 1764, and was buried at Penn on 4 August;[2] Assheton and Esther were the parents of:
    1. Honourable Penn Assheton Curzon,[3] MP, eldest son, born 31 January, 1757, died 1 September, 1797, married on 31 July, 1787, by special licence at Porter's Lodge, co Hertford, the seat of Lord Howe, Sophia Charlotte, Baroness Howe, oldest daughter and coheir of Admiral Richard, Earl Howe, KG, and his wife Mary, the daughter of Chiverton Hartopp;[1]
    2. Esther Curzon, who was married to Sir George Bromley, Bart, of Stoke Hall, Nottinhamshire;[3] and
    3. Mary Curzon, who was married to Bilson Legge Baron Stawell.[3]
  2. Dorothy Grosvenor, daughter of Sir Robert Grosvenor, Bart, of Eaton Hall, Cheshire,[3] and sister of Richard 1st Earl Grosvenor, on 6 February, 1766, at St George's Hanover Square, London; Dorothy died on 25 February, 1774 and was buried at Penn;[2] Assheton and Dorothy were the parents of:
    1. Elizabeth Curzon;[3]
    2. Assheton Curzon;[3]
    3. Charlotte Curzon, who was married to Dugdale Stratford Dugdale, Esq, of Merevale, Warwickshire;[3]
    4. Robert Curzon, married to Harriet Ann, eldest daughter of Cecil Bisshopp Baron de la Zouche of Parham, Sussex;[3] and
    5. several other children who died young.[3]
  3. Anna Margaretta Meredith, daughter of Amos Meredith and sister of Sir William Meredith, baronet, and relict of Barlow Tregothick, Esq, Alderman of London, on 17 April, 1777, at St George's Hanover Square; Anna died on 13 June, 1804;[2] their marriage was childless.[3]

Through his first marriage to Esther daughter of William Hanmer, esq, of Iscoyd, Flintshire, (of The Fenn, in Hanmer, Flintshire[2]) the Curzon family gained the estate of Brewer's Hall, anciently called Bruereshalgh, in the city of Chester, Cheshire.[5]

Assheton's eldest son, Penn predeceased his father, dying aged 40, at Penn, co Buckingham, on 1 September, 1797, at his father's house.[1] Penn's oldest son George Augustus William Curzon, born 4 February, 1788, also predeceased his grandfather, dying at his mother's house at Twickenham on 6 January, 1805.[1]

His father and elder brother, Sir Nathaniel, were elected to represent Clitheroe in Parliament, and following in their footsteps, Assheton represented Clitheroe from 18 April, 1754 to 1 September, 1780, and 28 February, 1792.[2]

On 13 August, 1794, he was created Baron Curzon of Penn.[2]

On 27 February, 1802, he was created Viscount Curzon of Penn.[2]

Assheton Curzon, Viscount Curzon of Penn, died on 21 March, 1820,[3] at Lower Brook Street, London, aged 91.[2] He was interred at Penn,[2] where his hatchment is on the south wall of the south aisle of Holy Trinity Penn Church and where his surviving children erected a monument to him by Sir Francis Chantrey, deemed to have been the greatest English sculptor of his generation.[3] His will dated 24 June, 1809, with its two codicils dated 7 March, 1812 and 2 February, 1818, proved 8 April, 1820, by the Hon. Robert Curzon, sole executor.[2] He was succeeded by his son Penn's third son, [[Richard William Penn Curzon-Howe, Earl Howe, PC, GCH.[1]
