Research Notes

  • first name spelling - primary sources spelled his first name as either Louis or Lewis. In his death certificate[1] and on his tombstone, his first name was spelled "Louis" and hence that is the spelling used in his profile; otherwise his name is spelled as given in the respective primary sources.
  • Alfred Hiestand - in the 1880 federal census,[6] Alfred Hiestand was enumerated in the household of Louis D. Pierle and it was recorded that Alfred was "as one of the family". Alfred was the son of John W. Hiestand and Ruth Ann (Mitchell) Hiestand. Alfred's mother, Ruth, died in 1878, and his father, John, was left with 7 children (including Alfred) to take care of. The solution was that the younger children all went to live with family members or close family friends, of whom Louis & Mattie Pierle appear to have been.
