Biography

This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

James Henry Slatton was born in Tennessee in White County in 1869. He was a nurseryman (as in plant cultivation).

He married Jennie Meadows, 27 January, 1895 in Warren County, Tennessee. [1]

In 1900 census, his sisters Fannie and Presha and two sisters-in-law, Ella and Birdie Meadows, are in his household. [2]

Issue in evidence are: Tandy (female), Admiral George Dewey , Herman Kell, Loretta A., Jennie T., Josie, Robert Clyde, Lucille B., Johnnie Jewell (twin) and Louis Ewel (twin) Slatton. Lack of continuation in census suggests young death for Josie, but this is unclear. Johnnie Jewell was a twin to brother Louis Ewell; Johnnie died by falling into a tub of water, Oct 11, 1919 [3]

After Jennie's death in 1918, he married Jennie T. Mathis in Nashville, Tennessee in 1921. [4] No children are suspected from that marriage. She was a daughter of E.A. Mathis and Jennie Martin, according to death cert informant. [5]

James H. died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1940 at Vanderbilt Hospital, but his widow reports that they had been living in Tuscumbia, Colbert County, Alabama, and James was a nursery operator. [6] He is buried beside his first wife in Webb Cemetery, Dibrell, Warren County Tennessee.[7]

The death cert gives his birth year as 1853 instead of 1869.[6]

Family Stories

The 1900 census names a son as "Sampson" because he was a new-born, not yet named, and apparently a strong and stout baby, so one of his aunts allegedly gave his name as "Sampson."[2] He later appears as Herman Kell Slatton.

Research Notes

  • Given names - The given names Tandy and Jewel are found among descendants of both genders.
  • Widow - Jennie (Mathis) Slatton died in Virginia in 1967 [5] and is buried in Virginia, according to a memorial, not a primary source. [8]
