Biography

Mary was baptised on 4 February 1558/1559, the daughter of Gilbert Saltonstall of Hipperholme.^[1][2]

She married Francis Savile of Lupset about 1584. The marriage settlement was dated 19 November 1584 and the land transactions registered at Wakefield Manor Court 14 May 1585: "Thornes, Wakefield: George Savile of Barroughbye in the county of Lincoln esq by Gilbert Saltonstall, lord’s tenant and sworn, surrendered into the lord's hands all of that capital messuage called Lupsett Hall and all tenements, cottages, houses, buildings, lands, meadows, pastures, woods, commons and hereditaments whatsoever in Thornes in the grave ship of Wakefeld held from the queen by copy of the rolls of the court as of her manor of Wakefeld (certain lands lately acquired from John Souche kt as now excepted): to the use of Martin Birkehead esq and William Savile gen their heirs etc for all the uses specified in an indenture dated 19 November 1584 made between George Savile and Gilbert Saltonstall concerning a certain marriage portion between Francis Savile gen, brother of the said George, and Mary Saltonstall, daughter of the said Gilbert. Agreed. Entry fine 13s 4d".^[3]

Mary is mentioned as "Mary Savile my daughter" in the will of Gilbert Saltonstall of Rooks, proved 9 January 1598/1599.^[4]

Research Notes

Foster's pedigree shows Mary Saltonstall as Francis's first wife^[5] but that cannot be correct, on the basis of his father's will mentioning Francis's wife Katherine in 1569, and Mary's 1584 marriage settlement. Mary was only 10 years old in 1569 and was still living in 1599 when she was mentioned in her father's will as "Mary Saville my daughter".

There are two Wikitree profiles for Gilbert Saltonstall, which share some similar features. Gilbert Saltonstall 1543 - 1598 and Gilbert Saltonstall undated, but said to be the father of Samuel Saltonstall, who is mentioned in the 1598 will and is Mary's brother. Both profiles are shown as sons of a Richard Saltonstall, but the father of Gilbert of Rooks is said to be John Saltonstall.
