Biography

Marie Ida Ducharme, daughter of Jean Desire Ducharme and Susan Amelia Creswell, was born on 4 November 1887 in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States.^[1] She was enumerated with her parents during the 1900 census in Lafayette, at 13 years old.^[2]

Her parents divorced before 1910, and her mother remarried to John L Mays. Not long afterwards, she and her siblings were adopted by their mother's new husband, and took the Mays name. It is unknown whether the adoption was formal or informal, but the name change became permanent.^[3]
