Biography

Mathilda Sellers or Fellers(?) was born about 1827 and married before 1845 in Breslau, Prussia, now Wroclaw Poland. They immigrated to the US leaving Bremerhaven, Prussia on the Ship Gaston, arriving 21 Aug 1850[1] They moved to Buffalo New York, where three sons were baptized there, all on the same day[2] By 1860 the family had returned to NYC where they are found in the census, in an apartment building, though another son, Emile G would be born in Dec 1860. Gus Weitz appears in the NYC directories in 1861 ad 1862, and maybe 1863 as I found him in three addresses, as a watchmaker. Then he just drops out of site. He may be the Gustav White, age 43 on the Union Sailing Brig, which capsized in a hurricane on the way to the Gulf of Mexico to blockade aid coming to the south. He simply is gone- no death certificates that I can find, no divorce. I am fairly sure at this point, he either enlisted or was conscripted into the navy as a sailor and died on the ship. All were lost except one who was found clinging to wreckage in the following days. It is also possible he died in 1861. The city directories keep listing him but there is an 1861 and 1864 directory of New York City that show her as the widow of Gustavus Weitz. In 1865, Matilda is still listed as Matilda Weitz, widow of Gustavus[3] By 1870, Mathida has remarrierd to another German immigrant who had served in the US Army, in the Co D, 2nd Infantry, CT.

Perhaps he had roots in CT, as by 1870, they had moved to Canterbury CT. She'd had two more children before 1870, Lillie and Frederick. Lillie is listed as being born in NY and Frederick in CT. Anna, Henry, William, Not all of the Weitz children were with her by then, and they are listed as Whites. Anna, William and Henry are with her, working in a woolen mill, while Emile G. is living two doors away, age 8, with another family and Mars (Max? Morris_ is not found at all. [4] By 1880, they are in Boston MA.

She died in Boston MA on 22 Jun 1885, and that listing gives her maiden name as Feller. She was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Boston MA[5]

By the 1900 United States Federal Census, William Stoudt is living in the "Old Soldier's Home" in Chelsea MA, having served in the Army, age 80, born in Germany arrived in the US in 1848 , having lived in the US for 51 years[6] William Stoudt died in 1907 in the "Old Soldier's Home" in Chelsea MA.
