William Merrit was born 11 December, 1819, and baptised 25 November, 1821.[1] He was the son of convicts Charles Meyrick and Susannah Brown.
After his mother began a relationship with convict Thomas Shaw in the early 1820s he was known as William Merritt Shaw - they formally married in 1828. William was recorded as Thomas's son on the 1825 muster (census).[2]
William married Margaret Innes at Scone, NSW, on the 10th of February, 1851.[3]
