  • Research Notes

The Rev Charles Stonhouse was born on the 20th of January 1807 in Sunning Well in Berkshire, the son.of Timothy Stonhouse-Vigor and his wife Charlotte Oliver nee Huntingford his father had assumed the name Vigor in 1795 and Charles chose not to use it. His father was the Vicar of Sunning Well and later the Archdeacon of Gloucester.

He married Anne Lucy Lewis on the 16th of January 1839 at All Soul's in Marylebone. All the time he was a portrait artist and it is likely he met Anne through this connection as her father was the artist Frederick Christian Lewis and are known to have worked together. Charles exhibited portrait and genre painting at the Royal Academy and British Institute from.1833 to 1856.

In 1851 they were living at Weston- Super-Mare with their three young sons. At that time Charles was enumerated as a former portrait artist: it was likely that during this period he became a Clerk in Holy Orders,as his father before him and his brothers Arthur and Frederick.

The following year Charles became the Vicar of St Peter:s in Frimley. He came at a time when George Hollest the former Vicar had been murdered by intruders so it was unlikely it was a coveted post. It is also likely with his sister Clara married to Gilbert Heathcote the Rector of Ash, who held the ability to appoint clergy at Frimley he would have been put forward for the position. He and his young family moved into the Parsonage at Frimley.

After 1866, when St Peter's was separated from its mother church as he became the Rector of Frimley.

They had one daughter Rosalie born in Frimley and married Arthur Cadlick Pain and is buried at Frimley. Their youngest son Gilbert Heathcote Stonhouse and his family are also buried in Frimley His we wife died in 1864 and he continued to live in Frimley until his death the 8th of February 1883

He was buried at St Peter's on the 13th of February 1883
