Biography

Chancey B. Hinman was born in Delaware County, New York[1] in July of 1829.[2] This profile uses "Chancey" as the spelling of his name because he signed his name using this spelling.[3] He was the son of Cyrus Hinman and Esther Silliman.[4]

In 1850, he was enumerated in the census in the household of his brother, Orrin T. Hinman in Stamford, Delaware County as a 21-year old farmer, born in New York.[5]

In the 1855 New York state census, Chancey's mother, Esther Hinman, was listed as head of household and he was listed as her son, a 25-year old farmer.[6]

In 1860, "C.D. Hinman" headed a household that included Esther Hinman and a domestic servant, Minerva Holliday. Chancey was listed as a 31-year old farmer born in New York, with $3,000 in real estate and $1200 in personal estate.[7]

Chancey married A. Augusta Munger[8] before June of 1865, when they were listed as a married couple in the 1865 New York state census. Chancey Hinman (35) and wife Augusta (29) were living in Stamford, Delaware County.[9]

In the 1870 U.S. census, Chancey and Augusta's household also included his 79-year old mother, Ester Hinman, born in Connecticut.[10]

In the 1875 New York state census, Chancey headed a household in Stamford that included his wife and mother as well as a servant, Sarah Hodges, who was born in Virginia. Chancey and "A. Augusta" were said to have been born in Delaware County, while Esther was born in Connecticut.[1]

Chancey and A. Augusta Hinman were witnesses to the will of Chancey's brother, Orrin T. Hinman, which was written on 27 September 1880.[11] Chancey was also appointed co-Executor of Orrin's will, an office he declined.[12]

Adopted Daughter

Around 1880, Chancey B. Hinman and his wife, Augusta Munger, adopted a daughter, Bessie Netherwood. Bessie was the biological daughter of Daniel Netherwood,[13] a tailor living in Orange county, New York, who had likely fallen on hard times (at least one other child, Alice, was adopted out, see discussion on profile of Bessie Hinman Windrum). The circumstances of the adoption, how they met, given the fact that the parties lived at some distance from one another, and the nature of the Hinman's relationship to the Netherwood family --if any--are not known at present.

In 1880, Chancey was a 62-year old married farmer, born in New York and living in Stamford. His household in the census that year included his wife and a 13-year old "daughter" Elizabeth, as well as a 14-year old nephew, George Mugler (probably 'Munger,' which was Augusta's maiden name).[14] Chancey's 1908 will (see below) named "Bessie Windrum" as his adopted daughter, so it is likely that Elizabeth was "Bessie" and that her adoption took place after 1875, since she was not enumerated in Chancey's household that year. Bessie's age was also incorrectly listed in the 1880 census. She was listed as a 13-year old girl, but she was actually a decade younger.[15] Her entries in later census records indicate that she was born in March of 1878.

Some time before 1892, Chancey, Augusta, and Bessie moved to Catskill, Greene County, New York, where they were found in the New York state census taken that year.[16]

Bessie married David Windrum on 16 October 1895 in Catskill.[17] Their marriage was announced the following day in The Columbia Republican, a newspaper published across the Hudson River in Hudson, Columbia county, New York:[18]

"The Cards are Out"

"Cards are out for the marriage of David L. Windrum, of Catskill, and Miss Bessie Hinman, of Shokan, Ulster county."

In 1900, Chancey's household in Catskill that year included just his wife, Augusta.[19] His daughter Bessie lived next door with her husband and son.[20]

In 1904, Chancey and Augusta's daughter Bessie, then living in Catskill, reportedly had some marital troubles. A newspaper notice in The Columbia Republican, published in Hudson, New York described the difficulties:[21]

"Catskill Divorce Action"

"Bessie Windrum has brought an action against her husband, David L. Windrum, in the Supreme Court for separation. Mrs. Windrum is the daughter of Daniel Netherwood, who formerly lived in this city. Windrum formerly lived at Shokan and is one of the superintendents of the Alsen cement works. Mrs. Windrum charges her husband with accusing her of infidelity with a doctor, a dominie and others in Catskill, where the parties are now living, and using bad language to her and calling her names. A motion for alimony and counsel fee in the action will be heard before Judge Cochrane at Hudson June 4th next."

Chancey and Augusta were living in Kingston when Augusta died in August of 1908. The following obituary appeared in a Delaware County newspaper, the Hobart Independent:[22]

"The body of Mrs. Chauncey Hinman, who died in Kingston early in the week, was brought here Wednesday for interment in Locust Hill cemetery. Her maiden name was Augusta Munger and she formerly lived in this vicinity. She was 73 years old."

Chancey passed away on 1 January 1909 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. An obituary appeared in a Delaware County newspaper, the Hobart Independent:[23]

"Chauncey B. Hinman died Friday of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Effie Windrum in Kingston, aged 79 years. Funeral services were held Sunday in Kingston, and interment was made at Stamford Monday. Mr. Hinman was a former resident of this town, occupying what is now known as the Tingley farm, between here and Stamford on the east side of the river. A brother, Orrin T. Hinman, who lived on the opposite side of the river died about 1883. For a number of years, Mr. Hinman had been a resident of Catskill."

Chancey wrote his will on 21 August 1908, perhaps prompted by the death of his wife. It was probated in Ulster County on 8 February 1909.[24] In it, he left the bulk of his estate to his "...adopted daughter, Bessie Windrum, born Netherwood and christened Elizabeth Hinman, at Catskill, New York by the Rev. Alfred Coons and the said Bessie Windrum now residing at #106 Downs Street, Kingston, New York..." He also left legacies to his nephew, Lucius Hinman, his niece, Carrie Rowe, and the heirs of his deceased nephew, Ollin Hinman. One of the witnesses to his will, J. Wm. Longyear, was the brother-in-law of Chancey's daughter Bessie.

Chancey was buried with his wife in his home town of Stamford, Delaware County, New York in the Stamford Cemetery.[25]
