Charles was born in 1868 in Nelson, New Zealand.[1] He was the son of William Garrard and Sarah (Mallows) Garrard.
Originally from Harwich, Essex, England the Garrard family emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860s. They settled first in Nelson; later moving south to Christchurch.
Charles started his teaching career in 1883 as a pupil teacher. After completing a bachelors degree he taught at Kaiaipoi. He was headmaster of Papanui School before moving to Auckland in 1906, where he worked as a school inspector.
He married Avis Todd in 1893.[2][3] They had children:
Charles played both cricket and rugby for Canterbury.
He passed away in 1930 at the age of 61[4][5] and is buried in Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland,[6][7]
