Biography
George Baston is a Military Veteran. Served in the Royal Navy 1898-1903
George was born in 1879. He was the son of John Baston and Louisa Ford. He passed away in 1903 at the age of 25. [1]
In 1881, George (2) was living at 44 Weldale St., Reading St Mary, Berkshire, England with his parents. His father, John (23) was employed as a furniture laborer for Vans and Carman. His wife Louisa (21) took care of the house and family. George and Anna (5-months) stayed home with their mother. [2]
In 1891, George (13) was living on Marylebone Street in the household of John Baston in Portsea, Hampshire, England. His father John (34) was working as a stableman. His mother Louisa (32) was taking care of the household. His sister Annie (12) was a scholar, as were brother Bertie (10) and sisters Lily (9) and Florence (7). His brother Arthur (3) is also listed as a scholar, while brother William (2) is listed without an occupation. [3]
In 1901, he married Emily Frampton in the parish church in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Emily is listed as the daughter of Thomas Frampton, a laborer. [4] He is later listed in the 1901 England and Wales Census with his wife, taken on 31 March 1901. He is listed as an Able Seaman R N. His household includes his wife Emily Baston (24), born in Maidnewton, Dorsetshire in about 1877.[5]
George passed away in October 1903 at the age of 25 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. [6]
Research Notes
Find A Grave has a profile for "AB George William Baston" that is also linked to his FamilySearch profile, but there is no grave photo, no date of birth, no family - just a plot C 8 1 and a note that Gravesite Details were based on "information provided by Royal Fleet Auxiliary Historical Society." [7] This would indicate that he was considered an Able Seaman in the British Navy, indicating at least two years' experience at sea, by definition. Given that he was also listed as an Able Seaman in the 1901 Census, this indicates that he was at sea for at least four years.
