William may have served as a private in Company E of the 21st Regiment, Ohio Infantry.[1] William Freedelein/Alias: William Freedline[2] William Friedline/ Alias: William Freedline[3] William Freedlin, Pension Date 16 Mar 1876[4] William Friedline/ ALTERNATE NAME: William Freedline[5] "On April 27, 1861, volunteers from throughout northwestern Ohio were organized into the 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment at Camp Taylor, near Cleveland, Ohio. The recruits hailed from the counties of Hancock, Defiance, Wood, Ottawa, Sandusky and Putnam.[6]
This information would have been verified by the 1890 Union Soldier's Census; however, Indiana's appears to be missing.[7]

It is currently unknown where their daughters, Sarah, Laura & Viola, are on this enumeration. Most of William's family has remained in Defiance County, Ohio. However, Mary's relative James Ramer was nearby in Washington Township of Whitley County and Mary's brother Henry is in James' home on the 1870 census.[10] Based on the birthplaces of the children listed here, William & Mary were in Indiana fairly early in the 1870's.
