Biography

Simeon was born in about 1826. He was the son of Alexander J. Gray and Rachel (Kimple) Gray.

He married Sarah M. Loomis.

They gave birth to four (4) children.

1. Luther Gray (1849-1928), married Ellen D. Larned.
2. Rachel Gray (1851-1918)
3. Alice Gray (1855-Unknown), married John Purdy.

In 1850, the 24-year-old Simeon Gray was a miller. Simeon reported that he had $2,500 of real and personal estate invested in a milling business. He processed 4,600 bushels of wheat and 12,000 bushels of “coarse grain” annually through the use of two mill runs, stones and water.

He operated the mill by himself, without other employees, and took about $25 a month from its proceeds. His output was 907 bushels of flour valued at $5,682 and an unspecified amount of “coarse meal” valued at $4,950.

Among his neighbors there was another miller processing flour and “coarse grain” who produced a comparable output.
