William was married to Matilda Lawson.
He enlisted as a private in Company D of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry on 26 October 1861 at Fayetteville for one year. William was captured on 17 May 1863 by the Army of the Tennessee at Black River Bridge and was sent to Memphis, Tennessee on 25 May 1863. He was held at Camp Morton, Indiana and Fort Delaware. He was admitted to General Hospital, Howard's Grove in Richmond, Virginia, suffering from chronic diarrhea on 29 December 1863. He was discharged on 25 December 1864 on a 30 day furlough starting 14 January 1864.[1]
William apparently died shortly after being furloughed.
He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.[2]
