His mother died after childbirth which left Herbert an orphan, he was taken in by his older sister, Polly. In the spring of 1901 he was living with his sisters family at 13 Brunswick Rd, St Margaret, Ipswich.

His Naval records show that he was an indoor servant when he enlisted in Portsmouth, # L/5479. He was 5ft 6.75in, chest 33.5in, dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion
01 Jul 1914 to 26 Aug 1915 he was training at the HMS Victory I, the shore barracks at Portsmouth.
27 Aug 1915 - 22 Jan 1916 he was on HMS Hibernia (Nov 1915, HMS Hibernia was ordered from the northern fleet to the Mediterranean, Gallipoli peninsular)
23 Jan 1916 he joined HMS Russell as an Officers' steward 2nd class, his character - very good

He was killed in action 27 Apr 1916 In WWI, aboard HMS Russell due to a mine explosion off Malta, 27 officers and 98 ratings were lost. Body not recovered for burial, but is on the Ipswich war memorial & Portsmouth naval memorial
