Biography

Susanna (Szram) Brichel migrated from Poland to United States.

Susanna was born in Połchowo, Poland on 26 December 1808.^[1][2] She married [Brichel-3|Michael Brichel] in Mechowo, Poland on 5 May 1832.^[3] They had at least eight children, though not all of them survived to adulthood.

When she was 65 years old, Susanna and Michael migrated to the United States. Several of their adult children and their families were on the same voyage and following behind son John and daughter Frances, who'd migrated to Portage County, Wisconsin in 1865, and daughter Julianne, who'd migrated to Chicago in 1872. They left their home in Starzyno for Hamburg and took a feeder ship called the Grimsby on 16 May 1873 for Liverpool.^[4] Then journeyed on from there to Baltimore, Maryland on a ship called the Austrian, arriving on 7 June 1873.^[5]

It is uncertain if she and Michael settled with the families of John, Frances, and Joseph in Portage County, Wisconsin or if they went to live with the families of Rosalie and Veronica in Detroit, Michigan. Where and when Susanna died is unknown.

• Anyone interested in families from this area needs to look really closely at both the Hamburg and the Baltimore ship manifests linked in the sources. There are a number of neighbors listed that took the same journey. Sadly, the online images for Hamburg are locked on FamilySearch but can be viewed on Ancestry.com. If you are in Salt Lake City or have access to restricted databases then check, the catalog for Auswandererlisten, 1850-1934, Bd 22 Indirect Lists 1873 May-Aug Film# 1049015 DGS# 7991967.

  • Listed directly with Michael and Susanna on the ship manifests (as opposed to with the other migrating families related to them) were two other children, Carl (age 9) and Anna (age 5). They are passengers 33 and 34 on the Hamburg list and 80 and 81 on the Baltimore manifest. So far, I have been working under the assumption that they are grandchildren, but I haven't figured out who their parents could be, and I do not know what happened to them in the US.
