Biography

Richard was born before 1580. He was the son of Thomas Fermor and Bridget Bradshaw. [1]

Richard married Cornelia Cornwallis, the daughter of William Cornwallis and Lucy (Neville). They had at least three children:

  1. Sir John d. 1625 - married Cecily (Compton) Arundell. [2]
  2. Henry d. 1673 - succeeded his father, Sir Richard, as Lord of the Manor of Tusmore, Oxfordshire, in 1642.[3]
  3. Jane Fermor m. Col. Thomas Morgan [4][5]

Sir Richard of Somerton was the first of the Fermors to settle in Tusmore, Oxfordshire. The manor was conveyed to him from Thomas and Bridget Williamson in 1606. Somerton Place had been settled on his widowed daughter-in-law, Cecily (Compton) Arundell for life by 1625. She had been married to Richard's eldest son, Sir John, who predeceased him in 1625. This would have precipitated Richard's move to Tusmore by 1625. [3][2]

The Fermors were Lords of the Manor of Tusmore for the next seven generations in the following order of succession:[3]

  1. Henry Fermor (1642-1673) - son of Sir Richard
  2. Richard Fermor (1673-1684) - d. 6 Jan 1684 m. Frances (Brooke), daughter of Sir Basil Brooke, of Madeley, Salop.; father of Ursula Fermor. [5]
  3. Henry Fermor (1684-1703) m. Helen (Eleanor) Browne, daughter of Sir George Browne KB of Shefford, co. Berks. [6]
  4. James Fermor (1703-1722) m. Mary Throckmorton, daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton.
  5. Henry Fermor (1722-1747) d. 17 Jan 1747 m. in 1736 to Frances Sheldon d. 20 Mar 1790, daughter of Edward Sheldon of Beoley
  6. William Fermor (1747-1806) d. 1 Jul 1806 m. in 1766 to Frances (Errington) Fermor d. 24 June 1787, daughter of John Errington of Beaufront.[4][7]
  7. William Fermor (1806-1828)

William Fermor who was Lord of the Manor of Somerton from 1806-1828 died without male heirs. He had an adopted daughter, Maria who married Captain John Turner Ramsay d. 1840, of Croughton, Northamptonshire. Captain John T. Ramsay became the next owner of the property.

Richard passed away in 1642. Several generations of Fermors are buried at the Church of St. James in Fermor Chapel, Somerton, Oxfordshire including Richard, his parents, and son John, resplendent in their carved memorials. [4]
