Biography

France won the Alsace region from Germany during the Franco-Prussian War. All Alsatian citizens had to swear fealty to France or move. I believe this is the catalyst for Joseph to immigrate to New York. He may have gone back and forth a few times as there are more than one passenger list with his name.
